I am so tired of all this Lindsey left because of Coach Dunlap bulls*it. People really need to know what they are talking about.

Ok PMG.  Why did Nuri leave?

PMG is on the money.  What Dunlap did this season was incredible.  Lindsey lefty because he lost his starting position to a kid, Greene, who had a much higher ceiling and was only going to get better.  Why should Dunlap accommodate one unhappy player?  Lindsey didn't do what he had to on the court or in the classroom.

The old Nuri leaving question will just not go away.

I agree with those posters who feel that Coach Lavin not running the games had little to do with Nuri leaving.  After all Coach was around for practices and other times.  I think Nuri  had an inflated view of his skills that were based on last year's success at a lower college level.  There is no doubt in my mind that had he stayed and was open, his skill levels would have developed.  But, alas poor Nuri did not give it time.

I think most, if not all us us, thought that Coach D did a good job in a bad situation.  I would not use the word "incredible" though.    "Incredible" would have been a winning season and perhaps the NIT.  Having said that, I am very proud of Coach D. and his efforts this season.  I hate to think what it would have been like without his being here, think Coach Roberts being here.  So how about a "Semi-Incredible" performance by a truly nice guy and good coach.

Um, to say Nuri didnt leave 'cause of Dunlap is false.

They has been a good cop/bad cop mentality since last year and Dunlap fit the role of bad cop. He rides players. He gets in they grill. He works 'em. He breaks 'em down.

Then Lav come in wit the positive reenforcement. But he obviously wudnt around enuf this year to balance that out.

Nuri shoulda manned up and took what Dunlap was givin him as constructive, nuthin mo. He took the weak way out and thats on him. Cause Dunlap wudn't doin anytin that wudn't bein done at evry program in the land. Dunlaps got an edge, which is fine fo the strong willed.

But Nuri left in large part cause he was unhappy wit Dunlap (and other things). Just the way it is.

Couple of developments.  Apparently Bruce Weber is not headed back to SIU.  They just hired former Missouri St coach Barry Hinson who is currently the DOBO for Kansas and Bill Self.

http://thesouthern.com/news/local/report-siu-to-introduce-hinson-wednesday-as-new-men-s/article_d6ee8b92-7861-11e1-97f3-001871e3ce6c.html

And Goodman is reporting as expected Buzz is not going to SMU.  If I were SMU I would make a run at Bruce Weber.  Good coach, proven BCS record and you have the $$$$.  And more importantly he is available.

I said the same before.  Weber is a great fit for SMU and the Big East. He's a real good coach and recruiter that isn't going to make Big 10/12 country happy if he's recruiting their backyard.  Weber would be a fantastic fit for a program like SMU with big dollars, a great conference and low expectations.   He's a premium coach.  They could hardly do better.

Funny thing is that Buzz is originally from Texas whereas Weber is from Marquette country.

Spot on. There are some people in the know, who actually aren't.

In some respects, Weber will have an easier time recruiting @ SMU than Illinois.

Weber's problem wasn't his recruiting. It was his coaching. He had top talent on his team this year. They stopped working hard.

it was a little of both. he took bill self's team to the national championship game but never really had any real success after self's guys moved on. He never really got the talent that could compete with the ohio states and michigan states of the big 10 world and wasnt a good enough x's and o's guys to overcome that.

I agree. He couldn't come close to that one amazing season. I do, however, think he is an excellent recruiter. He's not Calipari or Self, but he brings in several top 100 kids annually. They simply aren't panning out.

Meyers Leonard really took a step forward though IMO. He's a stud. The rest are off and on and always have been.

Hence my "Shaka Smart Concerns" - I like Shaka a lot, but he's also a huge gamble for a major program since he has zero track record recruiting after only 3 seasons as a head coach (his final four in his 2nd year was with 8 inherited players on the roster, including 6 of his top 7) - he easily could be Weber 9 years ago.  He COULD be huge at a big time school, or the school could muddle thru near a decade of mediocrity waiting for him to "bloom" as UI did with Weber - fair to good, but not "good enuf".

There is some underlying stuff at Illinois.  John Groce seems like a solid hire but he is not going to be well received apparently.  Some in the Chicago high school area don't know him very well and apparently there is some internal politics at Illinois.

There was a lot of pressure on AD Mike Thomas to hire an African-American coach.  In the last year he has replaced his women' BB coach, football coach and now Men's BB coach.  When he hired the football coach two members of the BOT, both black, voted the contract down.  They did not think Thomas did enough to hire an African-American.

So this time in addition to going after Smart, he pursued Leonard Hamilton and Lorenzo Romar and all 3 said no.  Not sure what else he can do.  He obviously cannot make these guys say yes.  In addition by all accounts he was offering someone like Smart a HUGE salary upgrade as well as conference affiliation upgrade and he still said no.

Fordham, thanks for the great insight on this thread.  You're all over this topic!  Curious, do you follow these developments professionally, or in your spare time?

It is a fair point though in terms of coaching searches rarely landing their 1st or 2nd choice.  Look at Maryland, great job.  They whiffed on Sean Miller and Mike Brey.  Heck look at Arizona a few years ago.  They were turned down by Capel at Oklahoma and Floyd at USC.  Even Miller turned them down before he reconsidered.  And those are flat out top 10 jobs.

NC St was turned down by Smart and just about everyone under the sun before they settled on a coach who had been fired already, Gottfried.

Oregon got turned down by Jamie Dixon, Tom Izzo, Brad Stevens and a few others.

Some schools clearly overreach probably.  But still even really good jobs are not easy to fill especially with coaches who have good jobs already.

There's some truth in  the old saying a bird in the hand . . .   And having stability is a good thing as well.  I think there's only a few folks who truly relish the nomadic lifestyle of changing coaching jobs.  While we're on that subject I read on ESPN that Larry Brown would be interested in SMU.

Sounds more like Brown wanting then SMU expressing any interest.  Don't see it.  Brown is 71, SMU needs a youthful coach who can recruit.

Yes, that's what "Larry Brown would be interested in SMU" would seem to imply.

I know I was re-iterating it not implying you didn't state it.
