NYC players
« on: April 19, 2012, 11:40:27 AM »
Started this topic here because it was mentioned in another thread and I didn't want to piss of the King of the Jungle by going off topic in another thread...

The biggest problem with NYC kids is not their ability to play the game. The talent of these kids who grow up in NYC in unquestioned and overall it is still the best in the country. If anything, its getting better with the younger kids.

The problem is that these kids don't finish high school here (for varying reasons) and people don't realize they are NYC kids when they eventually go to big name schools. Also, the kids that get a taste of life outside of NYC and figure out that they like it away from home and then want to stay away when it comes time for college.

Exactly, NYC is a tough place in the scheme of things. Can't blame the kids

They are either insanely overrated or leaving the first chance they get. While it's important to not ignore NYC, looking elsewhere has been good for us.

I have always been a supporter of dropping our allegiance to NY. Just not in the way Jarvis did it.

It's not really dropping the allegiance, it's dropping the reliance.

Norm repeatedly made the excuse that this generation of high school kids just wants to go to school away from home.  What I never understood about that excuse is that it cuts both ways.  If kids from a city of eight million want to go away for school, doesn't that leave a population of about 300 million looking to go elsewhere?

Pretty much everyone has a relative living in the NYC Metro area, and that would eas the transition for a teenage recruit.

Kids growing up in rough neigborhoods want to go somewhere safe...what about kids that grow up on farms or in barren towns or small cities?  I knew a former player at Marist that was brought to tears because he had to return to his rural Georgia home after living in New York for four years.

We should recruit nationally and internationally.  I don't care where the talent comes from.

I don't know how many stars Tyrone grant was (maybe 2) and 6'3 Anthony Glover couldn't have been that highly rated higher, but this team could use a guy or guys like them. Only saw Leroy fludd play twice on tv. I am not a scout but he looked good to me. Not saying he would be a star, but I know these are guys I liked rooting for. I love our team, but we have room to add a few tough guys from NY.

Anthony Glover was a stud recruit.  He was the #23 RSCI in 1998, ranked as high as #13 overall!

They have already addressed the Glover point but guys like Fludd do not want to come here and be 12th and 13th player on the roster.  He is used to being a star.  He is not better than the guys ahead of him on our roster.  Or the guys we are going after in classes behind him. Go to a mid major where he can be a star.  Oh thats if he even qualifies.

Anthony Glover was quite highly rated, although ratings services were far different back then.

People here don't realize that Sir'Dom Pointer is Leroy Fludd +.  He plays like a maniac out there and had the same rep in his circles.    I personally am glad that our staff isn't throwing out acholarships as haphazardly as some as our posters might.  Not saying Leroy Fludd can't play on this te but I think Lavin wants guys that fill certain roles for guys further down the roster, not just tweeners from 7-13 on the roster.  "Shooters" have been identified as a need and we seem to have greater priority for that type of player on our roster.

Sometimes its good to take a chance on local guys like Fludd, could turn into a nice 4 year player. But that spot went to Felix

Wow.

He was also 6'4". Don't shortchange him, TD3.

He was a monster in high school, though. And pretty damn good here, as far as severely undersized post players go.

I remember seeing Glover ranked in the mid 40s. Overall he did well here and accomplished a lot.

He also had very little help in the paint and was often guarded by a 6'8" defender
