I think the hire calls for a pure x's and o's type guy, i don't think we need a big time recruiter since Lav and Tony C are getting it done. Plus the program is headed in the direction of a program that will begin to get looks off the bat from big time guys across the country. With the Dunlap hire and Moe moving up the board we are headed in the right direction without a doubt. Congrats coach you helped restore a proud program and there will always be a seat on the bench for you here. Now lets see, Mark Jackson head coach, Mike Dunlap head coach and Moe hopefully a lottery pick and a Hall of Famer in Chris Mullin..... not bad

Gillen is a good call.  Was thinking Al Skinner as well.  I would do cartwheels for Cluess (and Patsos as well) but I don't see either leaving a head coaching gig after NCAA bids.

But also don't underestimate the NBA factor in this.  Maybe Lav looks for a current or former NBA assistant coach to come in.

and here i thought this summer was going to be a dull one.  let the speculation begin! i think Lavin reaches into the NBA. NBA coaching staff has been key to his recruiting success.

Here's a name for you:  PHIL WEBER.

Former assistant under Mike D'Antoni.  From NY (Long Island) and still lives in NY.  Did a lot of game planning on the Knicks' staff. NBA ties.

Some interesting names.  Remember, this is the "new" Steve Lavin" - the one who's apparently learned the lessons from his mistakes at UCLA.   I expect the selection will be an Older Coach,  like Dunlap, a noted "x's and o's" guy - likely with previous SUCCESSFUL head coaching experience (remember Mike was a two time National Champion coach in D-II).    But I also think it will be someone who projects to be around for at least a couple of years - barring a "miracle" offer like Mike just got.   Most of the veterens on your list figure to be able to find HC jobs in the fairly near-term (within a season or so).   Given our staff, the ideal guy would be someone who loves and is great at the coaching side, but hates the recruiting and Public Relations (glandhanding) side of it.  That's where the potential longevity would come into play.

Greenberg and Lavin would be the best postgame interviews ever.

I have known Slice since I am a teenager and I hope that he doesn't get the job. He is just not a top notch game coach and is solely a recruiter. I would rather see Coach Lavin hire a guy like Mergin Sina (brilliant basetball mind but will not get the job) then hire Barry. Barry had his chance to be on the staff and didn't take his opportunity, no need to go down that path again.

No idea who Lavin hires but I think he will go with someone no one expects and it will be a high profile hire. I don't think there is any chance that anyone gets promoted from the staff. This staff has guys that really have defined roles and none of our current staff memebers is qualified to be the X&O assistant at this point.

Can a DOBO do the X & O job?  Move Mo Hicks to Assistant where he can recruit, Rico or Tony to Asst. HC, and get an experienced XO guru to do the job from the DOBO role, which says up front that they won't be asked to recruit.

If I were Coach Lavin and not going to get a guy with NBA background to take Dunlap's spot, I would try and hire John Dunne from St. Peter's. He is a GREAT  X&O coach, knows the Big East as former assistant at SHU and wants to be local.

I think Seth thought he was low-balled. How about Wolfe. Coached at Holy Cross and ways back was mentioned for SJU. I think he was coaching woman. Skinner can recognize a top 50 who's listed as a top 200.

The reality of it is that Mergin Sina is not getting the job but he is an incredible X&O coach and as Dave stated in the Sina thread, I don;t think Sina is coming to SJU.

Lavin will hopefully select an X & O coach. I trust he will select right guy. I value Rico immensely, but his forte seems to be individual development, not strategy, IMO. All in all, the loss of Dunlap is nothing to sneeze at, but the void will be filled well. Lavin knew Dunlap was not a long term participant, but reaped the dividend of his talents in building a foundation. I am sure he has been thinking of replacements for a while and will make a great choice.

BTW, the electronic and print medea  attention our program is receiving is off the charts. Lavin is a master at PR! The cultural change here is incredible.
