Who replaces Dunlap?

I wonder if the name Jim Saia will come up?   After Asst. Jobs at Indiana State, Fresno State, University of California, He had a 7 year gig as lead assistant on a D-1 team that finished in the top 25 6 consecutive years, making 5 sweet 16s and an Elite 8, before going on to Head Coach at USC, Fresno-Pacific, and currently starting a brandnew basketball program at NAIA Cal State-San Marcos (a brand new basketball program, debuted this past season - Saia led them to a 19-12 record in their first season in existence.)

Lavin detractors would HOWL at even the mention....

Would be a tremendous replacement for Dunlap.  Again he was the guy along with Cleveland I was thinking of (Could not think of Boylen's name) who were both fired last year from schools out west and both are highly thought of coaches.  In fact the irony is Dunlap was considered a candidate to replace both at Utah and Fresno St.

True. A few folks I respect agree he is the likely choice. We will see. Great option!

He has the perfect resume' as Dunlap's replacement.  Has tons of experience at different levels and is a respected tactician from everything I've read.  Sounds like a guy who'd be a great hire.  Some recent quotes from an article on  which I think speak of what SJU is looking for:

"He’s just a very, very passionate guy about the game of basketball, a preparation fanatic," said Pacers coach Frank Vogel. "He’s been a breath of fresh air, a great addition to our staff — and an extremely funny guy."

Beyond providing comic relief, Boylen is charged with developing the Pacers’ big men, including Roy Hibbert, David West and Tyler Hansbrough. Hibbert, a fourth-year center, is averaging career highs of 13.7 points and 9.7 rebounds. Citing the team’s improved offensive efficiency, Vogel labels Boylen "almost a post-spacing genius."

"Preparation fanatic" and "post-spacing genius" jump out to me as being qualities that are very Dunlapesque.  Dunlap was all about spacing, preparation and defense.  Seems Boylen is too, and I don't think he is in the role that he relishes right now as a big man coach for the Pacers.  My guess we'll be hearing more of his name soon.

So, something nobody's mentioned so far, but will probably come up in the coaching search:

What kind of resources does Lav have to work with?   We all know that he was promised a very large budget for assistant coaches when he took the job.   Has that changed?    At one point I thought someone said we were near the top of the BE in terms of budget for coaching and staff.

I'd hope that hasn't change, but one never knows when it comes to the SJU administration.  Do Mike R's gifts go towards staff salaries?
Just some questions I was pondering.  If were going to be successful, eventually people are going to try to lure people like Tony and and Rico away.   And for a guy like Boylen coming from the NBA, being an assistant under Lavin could put him on the path toward a HC job, but I'm sure it would have to make sense financially for him too.

Dunlap was one of the top 3 highest paid assistants in the country as I recall.  I also recall Lav taking a little less salary to ensure he had the financial resources to have a top of the line staff and I don't think any of those items will be changing.

Madkins Wiki is incomplete - leaves off with him as head of scouting for the Houston Rockets.   He left that job for the New Orleans Hornets Director of Player Personnell.    I'm assuming the new owner is bringing in his own guy, which frees up Gerald.     Madkins, of course, was a Lavin assistant at UCLA -   the first assistant actually hired by Steve Lavin (to replace Mike Holton when he got the Portland U HC job).   Lav's assistants to that point, Holton, Saia and Steve Spencer, were all memebers of Jim Harrick's staff, retained when Lavs was named interim head coach in 1996-97.   When Spencer left for the HC job at Orange Coast college, Lav's 2nd hire was to steal Pat Sandle from Ben Howland's Pitt staff.

Gerald has an excellent basketball mind.  But I'm not sure if he's the X's and O's guy we need.

Earl is intriguing - hiring him would be an investment in a long term future (his potential as a future outstanding coach has been heralded by every coach he's every played for - since his first season as a Lavin frosh at UCLA) - but it would only happen if one of the existing staff is deemed ready to assume the lead assistant spot being vacated by Dunlap.  And of course, he's very good friends with Rico - so there's chemistry there already.

I think Boylan makes the most sense.  But as we know, first choices aren't always available.

I think a lotta peeps here is grossly overvaluin the coaching accumen of one Herb Williams.

What's Brian Nash up to these days? I remember people thinking he was a rising star in the coaching ranks.

Not sure what he is up to but from everything I am being told Lavin wants NBA background for replacement and there will no no internal promotions.

I don't know much about this guy from Pacers but he sounds like an incredibly good fit.
