Who Replaces Dunlap at St. John’s?
BY ADAM ZAGORIA ON JUNE 20, 2012, 8:52AM
...

Frank Allocco, De La Salle head coach
...

Interesting name if a legit candidate. De La Salle is known for their D.

But would local high school coaches be annoyed?

twitter mentioned last night Herb Williams(?)  Wouldn't be a bad choice IMO.
i was thinking about herb williams...highly respected, a great get.  i'd say far fetched....but that's what i would have said about dunlap getting the bobcats job.

But why would he leave the Knicks asst. coaching job to be a college asst?

He hasn't gotten a head gig yet from where he is. . .

Dunlap is a huge exception. I don't think we will ever see a college asst. go straight into an NBA coaching job with no head coaching experience again for a while. Bottom line I think the Knicks asst job is far better than STJ asst job.

ARRRGHHHHHHHH!   Guys, don't YOU go spreading this same BS!!!!   Been on Bobcats boards trying to correct this perception all morning!!!

Mike Dunlap has been a Coach for 34 years.   EIGHTEEN of them have been as a college or pro HEAD COACH.    5 years at Cal Luthern University.   10 years at Metro State University (2 NCAA Championships, 2 National Coach of the Year awards).   3 years with the pro Aussie Leauge Adelaided 36rs.   He hasn't been just an assistant his last 3 jobs, he's been Associate Head Coach to Lute Olson, Ernie Kent and Steve Lavin.

I'm well aware of Dunlap's prior coaching history. Sorry, I guess I should've specified "no Div. 1" head coaching experience. Didn't really think I needed to. Being a successful D2 coach is one thing, but you haven't proved anything yet until you've done it at the highest level.

Dunlap got the job because he is highly respected as a basketball X and O expert and is very skilled at developing players. He has also been a coach for 30 years. The highest level of coaching experience he has is D1 assistant as well as the 28 games in which he was interim head coach for Lavin. You will rarely see a guy with no head coaching experience (NBA or D1) jump straight to the league like that, regardless of their success at D2 and other pro levels.

I think Dunlap will do well as long as the Bobcats are patient with him. It's going to take a while before that team is going anywhere. But, with Dunlap's knowledge of the game, this hiring could pay off big time.

A great coach, and a better guy. But he's retired.

Just as it took a while for Dunlap to get done expect the same for his replacement. In the mean time have fun tossing names around, I'm impressed with some of the names you guys are coming up with

Let me start by saying that Rohrssen is a very good recruiter. He's gotten the targets while at Pitt that he was assigned to get (for the most part) and he also recruited well at Manhattan for that level. With that said, I don't really understand allnet's thinking here. While under Jamie Dixon and Howland, that staff (which includes Rohrssen) NEVER got a McDonald's All American. The reason why those 2 head coaches really succeeded was because of what they were able to turn some of these underrated kids into. If you want to credit Slice for maybe locating some diamonds in the rough, I suppose you can do that. But the fact is that as well as Slice recruited this area, they never landed a McDonald's (meaning a top 20 or 25) kid, so lets not make the man out to be Calipari.

In addition, I watched Rohrssen's teams quite a bit at Manhattan. They were teams that had talent but not much direction on the court. Steve Masiello came in this past year, gave the program some real direction on the court, completely changed the defensive philosophy and mindset of the team, and won with them.

My personal opinion is that Slice isn't the guy the program needs right now. Now if someone like Tony Chiles left?? I would be all for bringing Slice in here and that would be a home run hire. Allnet, we already HAVE a closer in Steve Lavin who has closed on much more intensely recruited kids than Rohrssen landed under Dixon or Howland.

We need a game planner and practice planner in here and Lav looking at those types of guys that ALSO have an NBA background kills 2 birds with one stone as Dunlap did, because Lav can go on the recruiting trail and tout the guys he has on staff that have coached/scouted in the NBA and claim they know how to get the prospect to the League.

Dave Leitao was a name rumored 2 years ago when Lavin was hired.  He was also considered by Pitt that same year to replace Pat Skerry.

He jsut got hired by Frank Haith at Missouri:

Then right after he hires Mahoney he is going to try to exume the body of Al Lobalbo and reignite the good ole days.

I like the possible hire of Tim O'Toole or Jim Boylen. O'Toole because he has been around our program for a year now. You are not inviting a stranger in, a lot to be said for that. Is a good x's and o's guy. Also, he has one best assistant pedigrees I have seen on resume having work under K and Boeheim. He would be a great choice. Boylen, worked for Heathcote and Izzo. Started good at Utah, should not have been fired in manner it happened. I like that he brings NBA experience. Which helps with perspective recruits.

I'd like to see our new coach also have a background working with Bigs.  That seems to be the one thing our staff seems to lack, experience-wise.

Shame UNC-Charlotte coach Alan Major is still being given a shot to turn that team around (10 wins his first year 2 seasons ago, 13 last).   Major has a unique resume relative to our staff.   He began his basketball career as student/manager for Purdue under Gene Keady, during the 3 years Steve Lavin was also there as an Assistant.   His first coaching job was 3 years as an assistant at D-3 Cal Lutheran University - under head coach Mike Dunlap :).   Then Pacific University, followed by stints under Keady protege Bruce Weber (Weber was also a Purdue assistant during Majors years at Purdue), then 6 years with Thad Matta at Ohio State.   He's a big man coach, with a unique resume item - he coached TWO overall #1 NBA Draft pick centers - at two different schools - Mike Olowakandi at Pacific, and Greg Oden at Ohio State (no other position coach in history can claim that - and only one head coach can - John Wooden).    He also coached two other 1st round centers, Byron Mullins and Kosta Koufos...

If the Charlotte gig doesn't work out.....
