Wonder what kind of salary he would get.  I would imagine a fraction of Dunlap.

Will he be a recruiter and out on the road?

I really doubt it.  At least early in any coming college career.   My friends on the west coast say his reputation is he is THE high school coach who gets the "most with the least".    He's had a few outstanding talents over the years (currently including Pitts), but he has established his remarkable record by simply outcoaching other teams, not just by throwing waves of talent at them.  His players are disciplined, in shape, intelligent on the court.  His practices are organized and effective - and that has allowed less talented teams to out-execute opposing teams on the floor.  He is also known for his ability in terms of in-game adjustments - a result of the discipline of his teams borne of those practices, that allow the team to implement those adjustments.   This may seem like a weird stat, but I think it speaks volume as to the coach's impact.   But there are schools that have produced more college (all leverl) All-Conference players than has De La Salle over the the period of Allocco's tenure - an indicator of that higher physical talent level at other schools.   But De La Salle has produced more than TWICE as many college team Captains, as any other California school - Allocco produces smart, disciplined, intelligent LEADERS - in other words, extremely well coached kids - Winners.

Most everyone I've talked to seem to think he will be an OUTSTANDING college assistant.   Because of his lack of recruiting  experience, they're not as sure of his potential as a collegeiate head coach - but that's a "to be deteermined a a later date" kind of thing.

I should also point out, most of those I've communicated with did not think he would even consider leaving high school head coaching at this time.  They all seem very surprised that this story has the kind of legs it does.

Interesting take.  It sounds like a great hire from all accounts.  Doubts about recruiting are certainly valid, but he might not have eyes on a college head coaching job at this point.  He will need to grow into that aspect, but Lavin has an eye for that stuff.  We don't need him as a head coach.  We need an organized tactician and motivator who can contrast and compliment Lavin and it seems he fits that bill.   I don't see his path all that Much different than Tim Cluess, except that Cluess coached at the D2 level for a short while first.  Lavin has his sights on Allocco and there HAS to be a reason he has wanted him on staff for so long.

Both are very good points.   And thanks for the info from the Cali folks CR.

Rothstein reporting that details are being worked out which will bring Frank Allocco aboard onto SJU's staff.

Ok then, appears this is the real deal.    For a moment I started to wonder if Lav was floating his friend's name with relation to our open position as a favor to get him some exposure.. even if we ended up ultimately going in another direction.

Doesn't appear that is the case.   I trust Lav on this one.   The concerns others have mentioned about D-1 experience are valid.   But we'll just have to wait and see.   If Lav is running at full strength physically.. then Allocco may be doing much more assisting than we were used to with Dunlap around.   I can see Lav rejuvenated and taking a more hands on approach in practice planning and other things Dunlap did.

Plus, you gotta figure Dunlap rubbed off on Tony, Rico and Mo.   I'm sure they absorbed a lot being around him every day.  And it's not like they're basketball novices themselves.    We have a well rounded staff.   Allocco may not be the nba-experienced stud we hoped for... but he'll bring his own expertise to the table.

That last point is a very good one. It's not like coaches don't learn from other coaches. Tony, Rico, Mo and even Lavin weren't just standing around scratching their balls during practices. Even though it hurts losing Coach Dunlap, the wisdom he imparted on not only our players but our coaches will carry on. Those guys had 2 years to learn from Dunlap and how he coaches his defenses and why they work and what kind of players need to occupy which spots on the zone, what traits are important where. I can't wait for the fall.

Truth be told I think a lot of us would have thought twice about Dunlap replacing Lavin.  Things have now changed with Charlotte's decision and good luck on that one.  At least he doesn't have to recruit but no way to predict whether the NBA studs will dig his taskmaster style.

Can we simplify Coach Steve's motives? I figure he want's a guy who will be good for his kids on multiple levels. Trust must play into the hire.

Also, don't know if anyone else noticed this but the athletic department tweeted the story about Allocco being the front-runner for the assistant coach job.

Not sure if they do that all the time, whenever a rumor is mentioned in the media.    But they did a few days ago.   Not sure if that legitimizes what everyone is saying, but it can't hurt.

Rothstein claims lavin "in hopes of molding a unit that  becomes  a legitimate contender to finish in THE MIDDLE OF THE PACK of the conference"....  as stupid of a comment as i can remember.  This team and coach steve have a much higher target.

Nice in depth piece on what FA brings to the table!

“@JeffEisenberg: Steve Lavin is close to replacing an NBA coach with a high school coach. Crazy? Maybe not as much as you'd think. http://t.co/Y9fZGNFr

I think he is talking about this season. That seems like a reasonable expectation for this young team.

A goal is never middle of the pack.  I doubt Lavin would say that.  I think we can finish somewhere in top 7 though, which would put us in tourney.

Middle of the pack may be more realistic but certainly not the goal. Louisville & Syracuse appear to be the top teams of the top of my head but after that no one really separates themselves

I agree.  And we've had this debate on the board before ... how high should a team's "goals" or "expectations" be.   Keeping in mind the two are not the same.

But you're all right, their goal can't be middle of the pack in the Big East.   I've often seen good coaches have a two pronged approach; a long term goal that is just above what you think you can do if everything went right, and then short term goals that you more than likely can accomplish.

That way, you build confidence in your players by actually accomplishing something.   So you say we're going to open the season 3-1, or have more assists than turnovers in our games at the Charlotte tournament.   Tangible, short term goals you can accomplish and the build on.

But for the season?   Goal has to be at least a double bye for the BE tournament.   Those go to the top 4 teams right?   I would think that would be the minimum goal, if not .. then winning the Big East.

And I'm definitely not drinking the Kool Aid yet, but even I'll admit our goal is much higher than middle of the pack.

What Lavin says to the media is calculated. He doesn't want a target on our back. That never helps. We have the talent. I'd much rather see them kick off the season w reasonable expectations. I think the analysts will pick us to finish between 7-10, and that's just fine w me.

We can take the league by surprise. To a degree.

Whatever is said publicly, I GUARANTEE you, Steve Lavin's goal is WINNING the Big East, not climbing to "middle of the pack".

If Alloco takes the job, maybe he can get Chris Mullins kid to walk on. Didn't know he played for Alloco.
