frank alloco opts to stay put at de la salle hs in concord, calif. look for st. john's steve lavin to hire gene keady as associate hc

Looks like Hoops was reading this board again

Sad how out of touch Hoops is. he tweeted this today. Old news hoops!

“@NYDNDickWeiss: f kenton facey of luhi commits to uconn”

He just tweeted that Sherman Douglas committed to Syracuse. ;D

That made me laugh, he still thinks John Thompson coaches Georgetown rather than JT3 lol

Hey, you going to make it to USF game?

I looked for tickets when it was first announced but USF hadn't made them available yet, and then I went away for the summer and forgot to look again. If I can get some I'm definitely going.

Lane Odom's name is popping up again.  I thought it would be a pretty good move but after some googling he was being looked at by NCAA when he was at Mizzou.

I'll take Lane Meyer over Lane Odom. If Gene Keady is willing, he's my choice. It didn't seem to me like he wanted a position like this, but that doesn't mean he doesn't, and it doesn't mean he wouldn't be an excellent choice.

In our glory days, we made our name with man to man defense. Gene Keady did as well. I'd love to see us come out hustling and exhaust other teams into making constant mistakes. That's what I miss.

We did what we had to last year to compete. But with 12 able bodies, we can stop this match up zone garbage. We're not desperate anymore, and Keady won't be suggesting that crap. That much he's made clear.

I actually love the Zones and hope they stay.  They are no gimmick. They cause problems.  We need to be able to play man defense at times too.  In our "glory days" our man defense was smoked by teams as well.  I love the zones and hope they remain a big part of Lavin's style.

Let's remember...this is STILL Steve Lavin's team.  And Steve LOVES his switching Defenses.  That's not going to change no matter WHO the assistant coaches are.   This is STILL about who best helps HIM to implement what HE wants to run.

I also have no issues with Lavin running the offense and Keady the defense

One of the reason our man was "smoked" was because Looie didn't like switching, preferring a defender fight through a screen.  Also, he almost never switched or made adjustments.  Thompson was quoted as saying he didn't have to scout SJU because he knew exactly what we were going to do.

As far as man or zone defenses, I think it's best when we switch 'em up, especially trapping after made baskets.  But I hated all the open looks and offensive rebounds we gave up over the last two years.

Does anyone have knowledge on John Moore?

Haven't looked John up in a couple of years.  At that time, John had been head coach at NAIA Westmont College for 18 years.  Career  355-197 record at Westmont.  He's also Westmont's Associate Athletic Director, and a Professor of Kinesiology at the school.  His wife Rachel is Steve's sister - she served many years as the director of the Lavin family Basketball camps in Northern California..   His sister Beth was a UCLA all American, a member of the Bruins 1978 National Championship team.  John also has consererable international experience, having sever as a coach on the US Junior Team, as well as coach for the Sudan and Bangledeshi Jr. National teams....

I expect SJU to play both zone and man to man this year and in the future. With the limited number of player available last season zone was really the only option. The season before it was an interesting change it has go to be 50 year? since  the announcers did not begin on the first defensive  opportunity Johnnies, Redman, go man to man.

Lavin as any good coach will  play to the strenth of this player.

We'll play both defenses, no question.   But for the time being it certainly looks like we'll play a lot of zone, and full court pressure as well.
We have a team of good athletes but no true big man, and half court offense isn't our strength, so different zones are our best option most of the times this season.

Down the road, I could see us playing more man when we have different personnel.

Also, not really interested in Keady becoming an assistant, and baring some kind of surprising bad news I don't see it happening.   Dunlap didn't recruit a lot, but why handcuff yourself by hiring an assistant who will NEVER recruit?   Doesn't make sense to me.
Plus, you can give lip service to the rules, but I think we get the full benefit of Keady's input now without having to list him as an assistant.   Not sure what more he would do as an assistant.

Hey, you going to make it to USF game?

I looked for tickets when it was first announced but USF hadn't made them available yet, and then I went away for the summer and forgot to look again. If I can get some I'm definitely going.

I am going to Napa first with mjmaherjr. If you want, I'll ask the school for ticket(s) for you and you can pay me at the game or hopefully we can get together before then while we are in Northern California.

Yeah, that would be awesome if you wouldn't mind.

Flights are usually cheap. For me flying into Oakland always cheaper than San Francisco. It's a great city, hope you consider coming.

It is always cheaper but you get hammered on the taxi ride from Oakland to SF.

We do have a true big man now in Obekpa.  if you mean a true big man as in Rik Smits style, then you are correct.
