You have no idea what he is looking for nor do you sit in on meetings. You are taking biographical information you read somewhere and assuming you know everything about someone and then further assuming you know exactly why they would not be a good fit. You are not conducting interviews. More importantly they have all been around people who have done those things.
And he has 2 now he will have 3. I was presuming his next hire thus when he has a full staff it will include 3 full time staff members.
Biographical information... what are you talking about, all I did was state the main roles of our two assistant coaches. Last year Coach dunlap did all of the advanced scouting, video and game prep work for this staff.
"Being around" people who have done a job, makes someone qualified to do the job..? Would you trust your buddy who works in an accouting office as a clerk to do your taxes.? If you were in legal trouble and needed a criminal defense lawyer, would you trsut someone who specializes in contract law to defend you..?
The staff needs someone who specializes in the all the little things and prep work. We have a big hole in the staff right now and hopefully it gets filled soon. The team has a ton of potential and could be a huge surprise if the pieces come together.
Like I said, there was a reason Lavin wanted coaches like Boylen and Allocco for the opening. If it was an easy role to fill, he would have made his life easy, promoted Hicks and hired a new DOBO.
I didn't say it qualified them, I used that as an example of something you don't take into consideration.
Seriously, stop.
Just a side note - one of the responsibilities of a Head Coach, sometimes apparently forgotten, is to DEVELOP his assistant coaches, just as much as it is to develop his players. I think it's bad for the program if after three seasons it turned out that Rico is still "just" a development coach, and Chiles is still "just" a recruiter. As with your players, as a HC dealing with your assistants you teach, you observe, you encourage, you reward, you discipline, you evaluate and you promote. Bruin fans thought Jim Harrick was nuts when he placed "untested" 3rd year assistant Steve Lavin in charge of the Bruin Defense in 1994. His resume at that time was basically "gopher". Then Lavin's defense up and won a National Championship a year later, and Steve was bumped up two spots to lead assistant that following year. A year after that he was interim head coach taking HIS team to the Elite 8, and as a relative newbie to recruiting, landing the #1 recruiting class in the country.
Gotta trust your head coach. If he brings in someone it will either be because he trusts their Xs and 0s (no matter what their resume), or because the trusts the Xs and 0s of someone already on the staff...Guys, he's not going to offer the job to someone he hasn't sat down with, hashed out everything, picked their brains clean, and come to an informed decision. If you think WE'VE got a lot riding on this selection, keep in mind how much HE does (and is KEENLY aware of it)....
