Most of the ppl I sit with or bring to games  didn't even go to STJ.  Wish our alums had half as much spirit as them.

This is a ridiculous discussion, why would anyone have high expectations for our attendance at this point?   We've been above .500 in conference play once in the last decade.

Recruiting success builds momentum among us, the diehards.   But if any other program's record was as putrid as ours you would expect them to have terrible attendance - and we are no different.

Lets make the tournament two years in a row, and if our attendance still sucks then everyone can bitch and whine.
Franchises and programs at all levels struggle to bring fans to games when they have no recent history of sucess.
Anyone who went to a Mets game in September this year knows what I'm talking about.

Mets game is apples to oranges.
How many home games we play versus them?  They are outside.  Beginning and end of the year is a bear sometimes in terms of attendance with night games and cool nights.

For a school with an enrollment the size of STJ there should be a much higher benchmark # of fans.  Bottom line.

Fair enough - there are plenty of games in a baseball season.
But I don't think you can ignore the effect of poor recent play performance.   Kids in HS have barely seen any success from ST Johns.   Do they remember Artest?  Eh, maybe.   And we had the tournament berth 2 years ago.   But besides that we've been terrible.   I don't need to tell you that, you know as well as anyone.
Will winning solve everything?  No.   But you will get more of both the average NY basketball fan, and more St Johns alums if the team is playing well.

Look at college teams who have struggled lately..
how many people are going to Depaul games?   Their student body is as big as ours.
Even Oregon with their brand new facilities can't draw because they haven't been very good lately.

I'd love to know how Villanova did in the early Wright years when they were struggling.   And that was only like a 3 year period.   Our struggles have been much more severe and for a longer period.

Overall, you are right - our fan support should be better.    But I think we need to look at this like building a program from the ground up.   One step at a time.  And if the team is really performing, like 2010-2011, then the fans will be there.

5,602 is a sell out at Carnesecca. The Hardy/Kennedy team didn't start out strong in attendance but if any of you were at the Pitt game it was like watching a Knicks game. Crowd was amazing. Johnnies fans come out of the woodwork when they are winning. Nothing more, nothing less.

A couple more notes as I was at the game:

-Getting to Barclays was pretty long and tiring for me from Glendale/Forest Hills Queens. Going from campus would have taken even longer.

-Tickets to this game were not included in student season tickets.

-Barclays were seat nazi's. You had to sit in your seat you were assigned. if they caught you they moved you back.

-Most of the lower bowl was bought up by Michigan fans.

-The upperdeck was about 70% full for the STJ game. I paid $20 for 3 rows from the top. It was a good deal for a double header (left early) but I'd be pissed if I was only there for St. Johns/St Francis.

-It's not like it was on campus and no one went. It's not really a hop skip and a jump to the Barcalys no matter what the Nets tell you. They have had solid non-conference crowds at The Lou.

-This game will not define them attendance wise.

News flash---there is ample parking around Barclays. You can pick out your lot on line, pay the fee by credit card, print out a receipt and voila, you have reserved parking. Been there twice this year , and neither time was there traffic. Lot was across the street from arena. Simpler than parking at the garden.

No way the upper ring was anywhere near 70% full for the Sju game.

I couldn't see.  The lights when sitting courtside are blinding when looking up. #bougie

70% or less than 7% is a large disparity.  At least we know they serve booze at Barclay's.

I was talking about my side of the upperdeck. There were substantially more people there for the STJ game than Fordham.

Were there more than the "less than 1000" fans in the entire venue for the SJU game that was previously reported?

There was like no one in the lower bowl for the Fordham and STJ games. Like, no one. But there was a decent amount in the upper deck.

I don't understand.  Barclay's is 3 stops from Jamaica.  That's hard?

If you're on the Port Washington Branch of the LIRR it's hard, that I can understand.

I guess if you want to stick to subways E > J > A or E > G isn't that easy.

I used to live in the slope on 5th and Sterling behind the Key Food.  Now that would have been easy. ;)

I was in lower level with 3 friends. By my calculations that makes at least 4 people. Guess you couldn't see us from all the way up in that steep upper deck. :)

It was empty, and the rather annoying security was a bit too much to put up w again. The Barclay Center sucks.

From campus we are talking about is about 2 hours if you walk to Queens Blvd and take the subway and its about 2 buses and a half hour away from Jamaica Station. For a pretty expensive game too. Students are used to getting good seats for $5-15 dollars.
