Relax people, were 6-4 in the Big East and were just coming off a 5 game winning streak. We lost to a good Georgetown team on the road, so what. Were not perfect but neither is any other team in the country. Lets take down Uconn this week and climb the standings

What should we do when we are 6-7? Because we're going to be.

1 game at a time, in this league you cant pencil in W's or L's

"with what  he was given to work with?" what does this mean?

An irrelevant program, overhauling an entire roster with the only real player returning a Div. II point guard. In year 2 of a rebuilding process, Lavin's got us 6-4 in the BE with a lot of promising young talent. But, because we're not as good as Syracuse, our fan base will just bitch and moan about substitution patterns they wish they had seen in a 12 point loss to Georgetown.

Redstorm212 on point.  People always point to year 3 in a rebuilding effort.   He has us competing in year 2 after taking a year off because of cancer.

You really don't count last year though?

Christian jones starts the year starting, I really don't see what he did wrong that nobody else hasn't done to warrant such a demotion or such a long stretch of time, Felix at one point was starting and I don't see what he did to warrant the same treatment when put on a scale and comparison to the rest of his teammates. This is just getting rediculous. We've seen what everybody else can do in extended minutes lets see what these guys can do. Can't insert guys for 3 minutes and expect miracles that not basketball. Basketball is a game of rythym and confidence and you can't attain neither of the two playing 2 minutes a game it's not fair to expect a contribution when utilized in that fashion.

While I loved the way Marco played yesterday I don't blame Lavin for not playing him more this year. You have to earn your minutes and Marco didn't do that until yesterday. The few games he's been in he looked out of place, confused, and had a couple of careless turnovers. It looked like he didn't belong on the court. Hopefully he's figured it out and has confidence now.

Exactly right.  When someone figures it out, we act like he's known it all along.  Marco moved better yesterday and got open.  More importantly, he was ready to shoot when he got the ball.  That allowed him to get the shot off more quickly.  That may be because DLo wasn't hitting and Coach told him he has to look for his shot.  He was definitely less timid about putting it up than he has been in previous games.

He also probably sensed he wasn't gonna get yanked since Branch was out for the game.  Isn't motivation a big Lavin characteristic?  Marco never looked motivated before yesterday.  He looked deer in headlights scared of making a mistake and getting pulled.

Yup. Let's blame Lavin for Marco's struggles too.

Your right.  Lavin has constructed a perfect roster and his substitution patterns are lovely.

Any sub patterns Lavin did this year you'd have a problem with, unless we were undefeated. We're 6-4 in conference with an undersized, young roster (I know you cringe at facts, but I'll say them anyway). Lavin has done a fantastic job constructing this team with what he was given to work with, not to mention missing a year to cancer. You may not agree, but the number of coaches in the country who could've done a better job to this point, you can probably count on one hand.

What Lavin "given to work with" wasn't what was left over by Norm Roberts. These are his recruits, and this is his program.
If the team is undersized, and there are two large men on the sidelines, the finger is pointed in one direction.

So you think it is easy to become a top half BE team starting from scratch in as little as 2 seasons? Is that really what you are saying? Lavin should have a team assembled perfectly, with no holes, no size problems, terrific players that don't need time to develop. That is what we should have expected from Lavin by now, right? I don't blame Lavin for taking a shot at Sanchez. The Gift thing is questionable but there is something going on there that we don't know about.

Jeez, this board has to get real.

It's year 3, not year 1. Is getting real accepting failure? For how long should we be okay w getting housed by good programs? And the Gift thing isn't questionable. It's flat out wrong. There is no reason he shouldn't be playing. That was a horrible decision. There is no one going to the NBA after this season. Not one player is remotely ready for that. But we've stupid players here before. Lavin needs to keep the handlers away from the school. That was one good thing Jarvis did.

These handlers are mooches. Losers who hang onto children hoping for a payday. They should be treated like criminals should they ever step foot in MSG or Alumni Hall.

No, when I say "get real" I mean calm the F down. We're 6-4, and lost a game coming off a 5 game winning streak. That's failure to you? We still have an outside shot at the tourney for crying out loud. And it's year two of Lavin getting his own players. Hence, year 2 of the "rebuilding process." Year one he got us to our first tournament appearance in over a decade, if you remember. Lavin is not a miracle worker. Reading this board this season, with no knowledge of STJ basketball, you would actually think Norm and Jarvis were better coaches than Lavin. And that says a lot about our fan base.

We need to appreciate what we have in Lavin. If we were 2-8 BE right now, all you debbie downers would have a point and I'd be joining you in your concerns. But we're not, and I for one am pleased with the progression of this team and direction STJ hoops is headed.

But, if Lavin leaves Felix and Jones out there, knowing they are not producing or ready for extended minutes, isn't that worse? Then our fans would kill Lavin even more for giving players too many minutes who don't deserve it. We don't see what goes on in practice, but I'm sure if Jones and Felix were deserving of extra minutes they would be seeing them.

Your right were not in practice.  But correct me if I'm wrong.  We went from Felix redshirting.  To him playing a bit in a few games and looking good.  Everyone calling him the next Paris Horne.  Lavin had some analogy I'm thankfully forgetting for sure.  Then he starts Felix.  Felix doesnt produce and hes done, glued to the bench.

Seriously, some people are losing it.

We are all of a sudden talking about failure?

212 is right. We are 5-1 in our last 6 in the BE with one loss on road to a very good Georgetown team.

Step away from the keyboard, have a beer, and watch the football game.

Chill the F out.

 Enjoy Super Bowl Sunday.

Damn, you kids are nuts.

Felix looked good, not spectacular when he was getting a lot of minutes. He also made quite a few bonehead plays if I remember correctly. We probably overrated him on this board after not seeing that much of him. And to be honest, is it that shocking that an unranked freshman recruit is seeing limited minutes? My point is that you and others on the board act like there is no rhyme or reason to who gets playing time. But, what you aren't seeing is PRACTICE. That is how you evaluate who is ready for a minutes increase. With a young team, Lavin has to experiment with different lineups to see what works and what doesn't.

Yea but I didn't realize you had to be at practice to comment on a team you support.  I didn't get my MBA in basketball but I still like going to games and commenting on what I see.

No offense but this is a message board where people can discuss topics whether it be sub patters, playing time, offenses, defenses, recruiting etc.  Nothing wrong with some constructive criticism and monday morning quarterbacking.

No offense taken. You're allowed to have your opinions on the sub patterns. But, I'm allowed to say why it's a little silly to criticize every single thing Lavin does. He's not perfect, but there is a reason behind every sub he makes, that he doesn't make public with the fan base.

Watching the G.Town game reminds me our needs are the 2 toughest to fill. A DuJuan Blair type of beast who loves to bang and the muscled up point guard with the great handle who gets to the rim when he wants. Coach Steve has not connected yet on those type of players, but he has not been here long. He has gotten us some players who I feel are still a bit green who might turn out to be very nice players who will compete well. I was disappointed in Harrisons performance in front of 15,000 people against a team that beat us up at MSG. Is he hurt?

I wouldn't include year 1, as he had to start from scratch in year 2.

All I know is, Lavin had us in the NCAAs in the only season he's coached us; and we are in the conversation this, his 2nd season.  Until this season is completed, I can't complain about the results.

As for the overall trajectory of the program, how can anyone dispute that we are better off than where we were when he took over.  I don't even get down when we lose a recruit because Lavin has done better than I had expected in both his first two full recruiting classes.  I trust that he will continue to bring in players.
