Ouch! Appears to be municipal financial management at its worst;

“@RobDauster: So what's going on with DePaul's new arena?: http://college-basketball.si.com/2013/05/30/the-obvious-lunacy-of-depauls-new-arena-plan/?eref=twitter_feed

This isn't very surprising, it seemed like an odd deal from the start.

West Coast Conference Commissioner JAMIE ZANINOVICH had his contract extended through the '16-17 academic year. Zaninovich is in his sixth year after being named the second full-time WCC Commissioner in '08. He was named to SportsBusiness Journal's "40 Under 40" list in '10 (WCC)

I think the ratings are a bit tough to project.  Things will change with "new" top dogs in the conference and a big shift in the landscape of college basketball to begin with.  Fox might have "overpaid" but the truth is that they need content badly, and the viewership ratings in the Big East cant be realized just yet based on past numbers.

The article is very misleading, to the point that it's bordering on decit.

Ratings are a percentage of homes-using-televisions/people-using-televisions at the time of the broadcast, in that market.   Creighton would need more than a 4.5 in Nebraska to reach the same audience as SJU does with a .25 in the tri-state region.   Yet they are presented as practical equals in this article (.225 and .228)

Fox took a risk by buying the Big East's rights for $500m; but they're not blatantly stupid.   They acquired schools that play in the largest markets on the east coast.   This guy presents it as if they paid $500m for a product that has no chance of being profitable; and that's simply not true.   Will they?  It remains to be seen.   But local tv ratings in any other market can't be compared to NY unless there's a multiplier.

The article says, "WTF" at one point..... How can anyone possibly take it seriously?

Your point is valid, but ratings are not a percentage of Homes Using Television (HUT).  That is share.  Ratings (Household Ratings) are a percentage of a TV market's overall universe of TV households whether they have their sets on or not. Sorry if I am being too technical.

Fair enough, and no thank you for pointing that out; I'm certainly not an expert on this, and don't want to hold myself out as one.   But I knew it was nonsensical to be comparing local markets without putting their size in context.

I've always subscribed to the theory that ratings are a sham.  Sounds like you know a bit more about the subject matter.  I thought homes without Nielsen devices couldn't be measured?  Also how are bars measured?

The quibbling about ratings and share and local and national misses the point about why this knucklehead is off base. First the analysis of the ratings is static. Last years ratings mean zilch. It doesn't take into account the massive marketing push  Fox will make across all platforms to promote the league. (Imagine watching a Giants/ Cowboys playoff game in January and seeing a s**tload of St Johns-Georgetown promos, or Big East promos on Family Guy or American Idol.) That will move the needle significantly. And quite honestly, the biggest variable of all for the league- and one that should make us very happy- is that the success of the league ( from a financial standpoint) is very likely dependent on the team in the largest media market in the US being really good. He's right that the league needs a big team as a draw. If that team is us, those ratings change dramatically.

I'd also point out that IMHO, last years ratings were significantly affected by ESPN's calculated ignoring of Big East basketball, knowing that they were likely losing the rights.

Even if you take the ratings at face value, he just lists them with no dollar amounts attached and makes no financial case as to why $50 million a year is a bad deal for Fox. Jut his opinion. Passing judgment on a ten year deal before the freakin network has even launched seems a little beyond this kid's capabilities.

I think we have to accept fact that BE will have to take a step back in the near term. But, we haver to keep in mind the fact that when the BE started we had an even lower profile. The key will be some early success followed by steady growth as we start to lessen the gap between the BE and ACC/Big Ten.

Another issue with that is we played most of those games on ESPNU which is much harder to find than the regular ESPN networks and the games that were on the regular networks included 2 NIT games which noone watches, a 9PM game on Valentines Day and an 11 AM Saturday game.

Moose -- Homes without Nielsen devices are not measured.  They randomly select homes that represent the totality of viewing.  The science of sampling assures accuracy within a certain statistical tolerance level.  In other words there may be a 98% probability that a reported 10 rating is no lower than an 8 and no higher than a 12.  I'm sure you find this boring as I am boring myself writing it.  Out-of-home viewing like in bars, etc. is not included in ratings, but ad agency buyers may make adjustments where they know significant out-of-home viewing is likely.  The whole ratings game is getting a lot more complex now because of DVRs as most people fast forward through commercials.  The adjustments ad buyers make based on when recorded material is viewed is another issue more boring than this.

2. Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany has charged the basketball staff to look at some scheduling options to help out incoming members Maryland and Rutgers on the East Coast. One challenge or scheduling agreement that was circulated in infancy stages was with the Big East. But like the once and failed proposed deal with the Pac-12, figuring out how to schedule with another conference can be cumbersome. The Big Ten already has the marquee challenge with the ACC. Some schools in the Big Ten have locked in nonconference rivalry games, or neutral-site commitments. It leaves little room for another forced challenge. The other problem with doing a Big Ten-Big East deal is that games already exist. Creighton-Nebraska, Marquette-Wisconsin, Rutgers-Seton Hall are games between the two conferences (Rutgers will join the Big Ten in 2014-15). Butler-Indiana and Butler-Purdue are on a rotation of playing against each other every other year (Notre Dame plays Indiana/Purdue the other year). DePaul has played Northwestern and could ensure that game occurs, or one against Illinois for DePaul. Having Ohio State play Xavier, Villanova-Penn State (not a reach) and then the holy grail of trying to convince Maryland and Georgetown to play could actually be recast as a challenge. The problem would be finding two teams that make sense to play Providence and St. John's. This is all still a reach and the Big Ten isn't going to look at any of this until after a year of watching the new Big East.

We've already found our big10 opponent. On a side note I think it would be great for our new league to start one of these conference challenges. Not the first year but thereafter.

Fwiw;
"After more than two months of intensive searching for candidates as the league’s first commissioner, the new  Big East hierarchy–led by Georgetown–has reshuffled the deck and come up with a new group of  finalists.

They include former Big East associate commissioner and head of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament Dan Gavitt, former WNBA commissioner Val Ackerman and Big Ten Deputy Commissioner Brad Traviolia.  Another candidate also has may  be included in this Final Four of finalists.

According to sources familiar with the process, all were interviewed by a Presidential group in the last two weeks, with a decision expected in the next  few days and an announcement sometime next week.

Gavitt was the overwhelming favorite among the basketball coaches and athletic directors, who have not been part of the process, while Ackerman, with credentials as the first woman President of USA Basketball, is currently working as a consultant on women’s basketball for the NCAA.  Traviolia has a Big Ten pedigree and has worked his way up through the Big Ten offices for the past dozen years and may emerge as the front runner, although the process remains murky in its details and direction.

The final interviews were reportedly held last weekend, presumably with a decision and acceptance coming in the next few days from one of the finalists in a search which has went in many directions as the Big East Presidents look for leadership in a league which will begin play this fall, presumably with a leader in place."
