The American Marco Bourgault would be my guess.

BTW you know you have gone overboard with your "homerism" when even MCNPA is taken aback by a ridiculous player comparison.

I do think he will be a bit better shooter than Bourgault though.  This kid set records at Mater Dei for treys and has only gotten better it seems.  This kid drops treys like they are free throws.  As far as comparisons go, at least when I make them, I usually do so only to compare body type or style not directly compare.  Dunleavy was a heck of an overall player though and I don't think an appropriate comparison.

If he's no better than Marco, why would he leave Harvard to get a degree at St.John's? I'm not saying that a St.John's degree is worthless but it's not in the same league as Harvard. It tells me that at least he thinks he's good.

Then again, you have to wonder why he barely played at Harvard.

He was #1 in his HS class with a 4.71 GPA. I think that's out of 4 BTW.

if max gives us anything, it's a bonus.  at best he's the 9th man in the rotation, and he could easily be 12th.  every team needs role players, and max appears to have a skill that may get him some situational playing time.  if this is all we have to gripe about in the offseason, we are in great shape

And let's not kid ourselves the type of recruiting Amaker has done at Harvard the last few years has been so good to the point that some have begun to ask questions.

He has back to back Ivy League titles and this year's team is in many prognosticator's pre-season top 25.  And Zeno Edosomwam is the highest ranked player to sign with an Ivy League school in recent memory.

Harvard is Harvard.  I went to many kids who were smart in HS and got to Ivy League colleges and flamed out very quickly.

I just wouldn't be shocked if it had nothing to do with basketball in why he didn't see PT.  Maybe the balance of Harvard AND basketball was too much?

He was good at BB in HS and some (not you particularly) are using his shooting percentage as proof that he can shoot. If HS matters for that, why not for this. It seems more likely to me that a very good student in HS would do well academically at Harvard than it dos that a very good BB player in HS would not be able to rate floor time in the IL.

I don't think either are particularly linked.  He does one thing extremely well but the other facets of his game could have been exposed at the next level.  Just because someone gets good grades in HS or a standardized test doesn't make it a slam dunk they can do it at Harvard which is the elite of the elite for a variety of reasons.

Harvard ran 10 deep that year.  Including 2 other freshman playing every game and good number of minutes.  I just wonder if it was something outside of basketball that's all.

Hooper's mom said he was miserable at Harvard in recent article.  Couldn't it be that he was just miserable at Harvard for a multitude of reasons?  Probably decided to transfer to SJU to follow his buddy Jakarr Sampson and hopefully grab at least as many minutes as at Harvard.  He's the son of a uber-successful music mogul and isn't a kid that will be wanton for much no matter which college he goes to.

Looking at all his pics on twitter etc. it seems he's having fun now and amongst friends, hopefully contributing to SJU basketball as well over next few.

If Hooper turns out to be Mike Dunlevy

Mike Dunleavy was only the third pick in the NBA draft. I expect Hooper to be much better than that.
Yea, I picked him because he has 3 inches on JJ so he got his own shot by running to the corner and just shot over guys. JJ needed a little help getting it off. Being we don't much run plays, I would like the Hoop Man to get his own. Hoop Man, good nick name eh? Getting back to a bit of reality, I'm really glad we got the kid from Philly. CO a nice athlete. I hope he takes to the coaching enough to be a little more help on offence.

I hope the kid is a great shooter and has a great career at SJU.

One thing that caught my attention. He is going to be a red shirt Sophomore next year and is already 21 years old - DAMM

Only two years older than a typical true soph would be.  He prepped and had a redshirt.

Mike Dunleavy was also the #99 pick in the 6th round out of South Carolina  :)  And he was only a 13 year NBA player,  before his 17 years as an NBA coach.   :)

After everything we have been through . How can anyone be confident this guy is going to be good. Hope he shocks me. Will believe it when I see it. Guy couldn't play at Harvard that is a fact. Don't know much about Harvard basketball. But if he couldn't get burn vs brown, what's he going to do against Georgetown. What ever happened to the mystery recruit from about 5 years ago?

You just need to learn to temper expectations.  Not just you but everyone.  People post because they are fans.  Some will annoint players the next coming.  Others will revert to the theory you presented where nobody lives up to those rave reviews.  You have to find a middle ground.  And accept that its just going to continue to happen.

The mystery recruit years ago was a Canadian kid.  Forgot his name but he went to Utah State or something.  Max ironically was the mystery 'shooter' transfer that was mentioned around the game at Kentucky two years ago.

This young man has a Great BB name; he is a gym rat; and he wanted to come to SJU--he will be favorite of mine regardless of minutes/points per game.  Good luck Hoop!!

I think Max is going to be a player that can come off the bench and hit the 3 ,keeping defenses honest. His ability to hit the 3 will open up other players. Will he be the next Mullin? NO. But, I believe he will be a valuable player next year ,signifacantly better than Marco, as a 3 pt specialist.

I don't know if Max will be any good, but I am certain that in order for him to be successful our ball movement needs to improve by leaps and bounds.  And there's reason to think it might - Jordan and Sanchez are supposedly adept passers.

But max is going to be in a position to fail if we move the ball as slowly as we did last year.

My hope, as he develops under Lavin, is he's the next Billy Knight - not the Bill "Mooney" Knight from Pitt back in the 70's - the Billy Knight who played the opposite wing to Jason Kapono for Lavin's Bruins in 2001 and 2002.   6'5 SG/SF.  A step slow.   Nothing as a frosh.  Inury redshirt his 2nd year.  Almost nothing as a soph - but 8pts as a Jr and 14 as a Sr, hitting 40+% from distance, forcing opponents not to be able to cheat off on the other wing, or clog the middle against PF Matt Barnes and C Dan Gadzuric....Of course it helped having Earl Watson at the point, getting them the ball.   I'm hoping Sheed takes the Watson Role, and Max can give a little of what Knight gave coach Lavin....

My hope is that he isn't terrible, because unfortunately Marco is.
