just curious, what connections does Whitesell possibly have with regards to recruiting?

My initial but completely uninformed thoughts were that he'd be a co-closer on big men since he's the expert, and he might have some Midwest connections, particularly Chicago.

Maybe I missed something.  Where is all the big men talk and Whitesell coming from?

I recall reading that he was in charge of the big men in St. Louis, and that he was particularly skilled at it.

Ok.  I've been biting my tongue for a bit as I see things like that because he served 2 years.  Just 2 years as an assistant coach at a relatively high level of basketball (aka St. Louis).  I don't recall big men flying out of there was my thinking.  My take on him is he's here for game prep, not really player development etc.  If anything he's used to working with less talented kids and squeezing as much out of them as possible.  Overachievers you can say.  Who's know how his tactics might jive with a roster of top 100's.

Those top 100 kids have not exactly proven they are prolific at putting the ball in the basket.

Well our fan base should be pleased with a bunch of two star kids who can shoot but do nothing else then

Their big guys definitely boxed out and set hard picks from the small sample I saw last season. So maybe they didn't have gaudy numbers, but they were fundamentally sound. If he had anything to do with that, I'm happy. Plus the game planning like you mentioned -- apparently their biggest wins against hard-to-plan-for opponents were drawn up by him.

Thus far, only names that have popped up are Delarosa and Wilfredo Rodriguez.  I guess we will have to be patient and see what the staff has up their sleeve.

I've been uncomfortable over how our classes were shaping up in the fall, but Lavin has earned the benefit of the doubt on the recruiting front. I'm okay with waiting and seeing how we do this year. If the team puts it all together as we expect they will, recruits will come.

But seriously, this thread should end. Want to judge on Lavin on his X's & O's, his suspensions, and his end of the season results, have at it, but he's by far and away the best recruiter we've had since Fran, and maybe even Louie.

Not questioning the results he has gotten, but this thread is fine.  There aren't any top 100 kids we seem to be involved with.  I'm not panicking in the least, but I'm curious to see where the talent will come from to replace our losses after this season.

it's completely legitimate to express concern over the current [2014] recruiting situation.  it's also possible to be very satisfied with prior results on the recruiting trail and support the staff fully while observing that we are clearly playing catch up for next year's class.

Agree.  And like I said, I actually like what I saw in the limited amount of video of Wilfredo Rodriguez.  He looks like a well rounded player and nice scorer, butit remains to be seen if he's a high level kid.  I also don't mind Delarosa as much as others do.  I like his soft hands and size, but he's clearly a project.  Those two would be fine paired with a top 100 type kid or two.  Just don't know who that will be if we land any at all?  Time will tell..

could also be that we are saving front court minutes for two top 2015 big guys.

I suppose, but we are likely going to have some losses after this season that need replacement with sufficient talent.  Not sure whom just yet, but at minimum Sanchez and Gift need to be replaced.  Possibly others.  Need to be prepared for that and add at least one stud a PF if there is one out there.  We need a SF too.  We will only have Dom as our lone senior SF next year.  Need more than that to develop.

Hooper as a small forward as well. I'm with you MCN I like the way Rodriguez looks

Yeah, but you're playing with fire if you approach it like that.  Sanchez and GG are gone after this season.  I'm hoping St. John's can hold onto Sampson and CO for this year and next, but that's not a given either.

In my opinion, the staff needs to bring in at least 1 frontcourt player that can immediately contribute.  While DelaRosa is an intriguing prospect due to his size, I don't think he fits the bill.  When all is said and done, I wouldn't be surprised if the Johnnies go the JUCO route.

Agree.  Maybe we go after a 5th year, immediately eligible senior big from a mid major as a stopgap between GG/Sanchez and 2015.

Playing with fire is good analogy.  In all honestly losing Sanchez and Gift you ideally can live with just 1 big man to replace them both.....provided Chris and Jakarr stick around.  If they don't yes desperation sets in as you replace a lot more.

However if they stick around then 2015 class all of a sudden we might be back to square one as we could in theory be replacing Dee, Dom, Phil, Chris, Karr.  That's 5 ships in yes a loaded class but now all youngins.  And I haven't even mentioned Rysheed yet.

I expect us to be really good this season, and to play an exciting brand of basketball. If that happens, we will suddenly be involved with talented guys in the spring. If we suck record-wise, that's when I will panic.

An immediate-eligibility transfer would be nice, but historically speaking, I'm not sure how many talented big guys have been able and willing to take advantage of the rule. As soon as the season starts and rosters are easily accessible online, I'm sure a boring night at home will turn into nerd city with me crunching numbers trying to figure out attractive targets.

Do you guys honestly think we are getting shut out of legit talent next season? Come on.  Be honest,  we know nothing of what the staff has been working on besides what a few " experts" say.

Much ado about nothing.  We should enjoy the season on the court. You know full well we will be fine on recruiting front.  There is no historical evidence to think otherwise.
