NYC talent has not been good in quite some time. Lavin has gotten the best player out of NY in his tenure here. Moe Harkless. The only other notable is Whitehead and Lav was not going to hire Tiny to get him.

Seriously start naming guys from NYC that Lav should have brought here?

Lavin certainly got a lot of good will out of that slice of pizza he bought you.

Norm Roberts bought Pizza.

What's your excuse then for the Lavin deserves a lot of credit for recruiting walk-ons and no basketball player in NYC in the past 5 years was worthy of a scholarship theory.

Heres a few from the NYC/LI/Westchester area from the past few years:

Omar Calhoun, Jermaine Lawrence, Matt Ryan, Ty Jerome, Daniel Dingle, Khadeen Carrington, Mike Williams, Kentan Facey, Hassan Martin, Isaiah Cousins, Devin Brooks, Kadeem Jack. I'm sure I'm missing some too.

These are a bunch of 3 and 4 star guys that are really the glue in which programs are built. Some we went after and didn't get, some we never went after because we had no shot (Matt Ryan), but to say that NYC basketball is dead and that there aren't good players here is ridiculous. Doesn't take a team full of 5 star guys to build a good program.

Omar Calhoun - Pops had no interest
Jermaine Lawrence - Tried but handler became too much to deal with. Cincy caved and look where it got them
Matt Ryan- Look at his list and it's appropriate
Ty Jerome- I like Ty and think he's a reach at UVA
Daniel Dingle- I love DD but would you have rather JaKarr Sampson or him? One guy is in NBA and other is avg 5ppg on bad team.
Khadeen Carrington- Already deep at the position. He is better suited at Seton Hall
Mike Williams- Not good enough
Kentan Facey- Tried but UConn had deep inside track with Rens kids. +Samuels
Hassan Martin- Probably should have been more involved. He's killing it at URI
Isaiah Cousins- Jamal Branch was already on board
Devin Brooks- If St. John's missed every other local school did too
Kadeem Jack- Beyond overrated.

I'm sure I'm missing some too.

Added in notes on all of them within the quote. Really none of them outside of maybe Martin was a complete oversight.

Who says he deserves "a lot of credit" for walk-ons?

and yes NYC HS basketball has been terrible. Better talent outside of the city with less hassle on top of it.

Dave - Has the staff even tried Jordan Tucker yet? That's outside of the city. He's been outside the city down in Florida already, so maybe he'd stay close to home base

All I'm saying is that NYC hoops is still good and has been for the past few years. Guys like Mike Williams are solid 4 year players that this program needs to be consistent and Isaiah Cousins is way better than Branch

Still don't understand the logic behind taking 2014 off. When does Chiles start catching some heat?
i have read that they took the year off 100 times already. What does that even mean? They brought in 5 players including Thomas. They tried to get Whitehead. I don't think it was a great class but if Adonis is good it isn't a bad one either.
Article is fair
Tony, who did they bring in who can play. Walkons don't count, nor does Thomas. You want to count the A&J DR brothers, OK but they really don't add anything to the 2014 class. We saw this happening in real time, but it became more glaring when Jordan went home that we did not have anyone who could play off the bench.  You take exception when it's said the staff took 2014 off and thats ok. Up until this year I took exception to anything negative said about coach Lavin. Since the guys recruited in year one I can't figure anyone who can play outside of Obekpa and Jordan. Thats 2 players in 3 recruiting classes. Thats why we are down to a skeleton of a team. If the staff was working it was not fruitful.. Marco couldn't play, Hooper couldn't play, and a bunch of other guys who are here now shouldn't be.  Now if coach comes out of 2015 with a great class it can be figured his way of going about things only effected the 2014-15 season. It hurts the core kids who are here now, but could be enough to keep the program going. If 2015 class does not materialize how many years you figure it will take to be back?

Not that this is some huge accomplishment but I do give credit to Lav and staff for getting Stewart and Henderson to come here without a scholarship when both could have easily went to school elsewhere.

I believe Stewart will be under scholarship come next year.
I'll give Lavin credit for getting great walkons , we just got no scholi players in 14. He could have given the walkons scholis this year ,we have them available.

Zach B. appears to have an ax to grind w Lavin these days.  Go back and look at his twitter regarding lack of access to Rysheed.

I put my comment in the proper spot, and then it inserts it with the previous comment. I keep trying to fix it so I don't drive you all mad, and it keeps putting it there no matter how I modify.  It seems the quote bracket right about my comment gets deleted when I post. I will figure out what's going on.  Do you have any thoughts on a kid like Tucker, a likely top 25 recruit, even considering SJ's?  I'm starting to believe the main targets should most always be top 30-40 onward, and try to be more successful in getting more high quality 4 year players as a whole.  For a long time, even Ricky P was getting more 25+ players.  Different circumstance of course, but it's worth noting.

Did it again. I cannot figure the technical issue, but I will get it. You'd think amateur hour, but I am doing nothing different than before - weird stuff. Goes with the territory  :2funny:

You should see what my transcript looks like. I drummed up a doozy back in the day.  Then again, all we did was doctor up licenses back then  :coolsmiley:

Didn't ESPN write an article on how barren NYC hoops has become because so many kids leave NYC HS to go somewhere else?

I would be suprised if Lavin can recruit any big to e recruits now without a contract extensions and nothing being said if an extension...0-3 start probably doesn't help but it will be interesting to see what happens to this program if they can't right the ship and you have a bunch of seniors with nothing to play for.

I saw two kids from Brooklyn on Seton Hall who could help us immensely. And anyway Lavin's recruits have been full of hassle. It's practically a circus.

Responding to a previous poster about the Arbitello beef with lavin having something to do with a nephew or in law is true. heard from the grapevine a family member is a freshmen there and wanted to be on the team as a walk on and Lavin supposedly "promised" arbs he would be on the team. Only Lavin didnt put him on the team, reasonably so if I might add, causing Arbitello to unleash on twitter about Lavin on BE media day.  Also heard from people Arbitello isnt the nicest guy either. Im not with Lav on the recruiting side but am against Arbitellos banter.

which makes that guy a whiny biatch with an agenda

With Doughty and Sampson, plus Stewart and Henderson...that's 4 SG and maybe even Jordan.
