The funny thing is, as bad as the staff has been this past year on the recruiting trail, if we get Diallo, we are a sweet sixteen talent team next year. That's with the assumption that CO and Jordan return, which they should. Lavin took some chances with some recruits and it didn't pan out. How can anyone say we are starting over if we are conceivably one realistic recruit away..

It's pretty simple actually ... lets make the assumption that CO And RJ don't come back, who on this current team will be starting next year?  Hence we would be starting over.  And if Diallo commits, we would be starting over with some pretty talented guys, but certainly players who might not be here for 3 or 4 years.

I don't know if they are coming back, but the way things have gone in the past, I don't think the assumption that both of them won't return is overly farfetched.  CO was going to leave last summer (or did leave) and RJ is flakier than a crescent roll.

I would not be very confident on Diallo.

Paultz, any guesses on the front runners for Diallo?

No, his camp plays things close to vest. I'm just not hearing positives re our chances. As people say, recruiting is fluid. That said I am no expert, but just am not confident SJU will prevail.

No one knows or has any real idea because he just doesn't know yet...and he doesn't talk much.  There's no there there yet.

In recent years, any one competing against Kentucky and Kansas should not be confident.

Trust me. His advisor is main cog in the wheel. I agree he is very low key & has not tipped his hand at all. This individual, btw, does indeed respect Lavin, so it certainly is not over. I just shared my sense of things. Again, I'm no expert.

From his point of view, all  of his final five are strong choices ...in the end he'll go where he wants.  We offer New York and certainty of playing time which none of the others do.

It is about what program gives this probable "one & done " kid the best chance to succeed. We'll see.

But you would, as an educated guess, believe Briscoe set that back. I think Briscoe and Sampson gave us a puncher's chance with Diallo.  I currently feel we are using a pea shooter vs. some cannons.

I think Briscoe would be to us what Whitehead was to Seton Hall

I think Briscoe definitely set us back....in many ways.  And I think he is going to greatly disappointed with his playing time.  Also, a big part of his high school game is penetrating and muscling in for baskets and fouls.   That is not going to be so easy against high-major competition

Agreed. And I don't think the Harrison twins are going anywhere

Not exactly.  Some of us who support Lavin want more than we've gotten in the past 5 years.  We just believe that Lavin can take us there.  I certainly have more faith in Lavin than most of the names that have been thrown around on thus site.
There lies the 64k question: Did the huge influx of needed recruits set wheels in motion that, when coupled with some other factors (cancer, poor due diligence, etc), put us where the staff currently is, and can this be rectified the next 5 years (smoothing out of recruiting classes, consistent winning, limited player nonsense, i.e., more professionalism)? Run on sentence question, but that's what this situation does to my mind - makes it run on and on.

I am still on the fence, as I feel there is good and bad to both options.  I do think having AC Whitesell with some time here helped the team run more organized this year.

Can Lavin turn the corner?

Had we gotten Briscoe, my educated opinion is that Diallo would have committed as well. With that trio in hand, Lavin certainly would be in good bargaining position. With all the work staff put in on Briscoe, his Ky decision was a killer on several levels.

Guess nobody on this board or at least those who have posted so far in this thread including myself knows exactly where the money that pays the coaching staff's salary comes from.  Even my closest sources to the program aren't sure. Could be the school, well heeled alumni (ie. Mike Repole, etc.) or a combination of both. As for Vaccaro's column what he seems to be saying is if SJU is satisfied with what they have gotten over the last 5 years than by all means extend Lavin because what you have seen is what you will be getting in the future. However, if you have higher aspirations that is OK and by all means hire and spend for a new coach just be prepared to also spend on the ancillary aspects of the program. So what this boils down to with respect to us posters/fans is that the Lavin lovers are satisfied with the current regime and want Lavin extended, while the Lavin haters aspire for and are willing to gamble for more and want a regime change. That boys and girls is it in a nutshell.

Incorrect. I want to extend Lavin, and would not be happy with a 9 seed every four years. It is your opinion that Lavin can never make a team better than that. I and several other posters disagree.
Don't know why I bother. I clarified my post to simplyred than I was not giving my opinion but was interpreting Vaccaro's column. My opinion was irrelevant to my post yet you post this drivel. Reading comprehension my friend reading comprehension! If I want to criticize Lavin I will do so in no uncertain terms but that was NOT the case here.

You posted the above statements. I took them to be your personal opinion and not related to Vaccaro's column, as you used the term "Lavin lovers." And I believe they are incorrect. No need to get hostile. We all aspire for more. Nobody is "satisfied" with one tournament appearance in 4 years.

Friends no worries but it is Vaccaro said that you accept Lavin for what he has shown to be over the last 5 years and that if we aspire higher it is OK to make a change. As for Lovers and haters I hate to use those terms but for sake of brevity I reluctantly use them.
