Anthony Mason JR was at the game today, with another guy who was about 6'8, and pretty broad. Anyone know who that was?

Aaron Spears!

Also Quincy Roberts was the other guy with them. Pretty sure Ryan Williams was there as well

Mase Jr is the most consistent alum at our games.

The fact the tech doesn't even count toward his foul count which I didn't know and baffled me

Technical fouls count towards a player's foul count and the team's foul count.

Not all techs count towards a player's foul count. Sima was hit with a Class B tech yesterday and that is considered an "adminstrative" tech and not a flagrant foul. This Class B technical didn't count towards his personal fouls.

Brights spots: Yalwe and Ellison. Yakwe is aggressive and he contributed today. Made some nice progress. Needs to learn how to defend guys like #41. Yakwe didn't once deny him the ball. That needs to be taught by someone.

Ellison went to the basket, and looked much better doing it. He was our best player today.

The Ugly: No improvement in overall effort. As a group, these guys just don't play hard. Mullin is here to bring gritty NYC basketball back to St.John's. Johnson and M'vouika were brought here to set that tone. They aren't. Maybe we'll see more of Yakwe and Ellison. Mullin is going to have to keep finding ways to make them better. I think a lot of us would just like to see the 5 guys that work the hardest. Mussini dribbling the ball behind his back when it's not needed is the kind of thing the staff has to call attention to. It seems like they aren't calling attention to anything. We play with a low IQ.

The Stupid: Sima? What are you doing? That was a very previous staff recruit thing to do. Players recruited by this current staff don't pick up technicals fouls by hanging on the run after a dunk.
Disagree on the "overall effort" comment. I thought they played hard but shot themselves in the foot by shooting poorly and making a few critical boneheaded plays. Creighton is an experienced, well coached team who was terrible just last season. I expect us to be a more talented version of that in two years.

We made Creighton look like a great team because we didn't contest their offense. That takes effort. Move your damn feet. But instead, we just stand around and pretend to defend. Durand Johnson plays his Avery Patterson dainty girl defense, and M'vouika and Mussini just keep their feet planted. No one boxes out for rebounds. No one denies the ball to their big men.

This was another lazy, and sloppy effort. Some of what happened is because of a lack of talent, but a lot of it could improve if they played harder. Pass the ball the ball like you mean it. Put something on it. If you're on offense, f'n move it. Move to get open. But we don't bother to put that effort in.

I wonder if Brian Mahoney was sitting there yesterday thinking, hey, they're running my offense?

There is no PG.  The offense will never look consistently crisp until we have one.

Durand needs to play because our only other perimeter weapon has to run point. I don't Durands game on either end but he's gotta play this year.  Same with Mvoiuka, to a lesser extent. Once Ellison and Yakwe get more seasoned, those two will play less.

Sima and Yakwe primarily guarded Groselle. I bet neither had ever played a guy of that size with a polished post game like that. Your expectations need to be recalibrated for this year.

I don't see Marcus lovett there. Anybody see him or care to speculate why he would not be there?

I was at the game (visitong from NC) and didn't see Lovett or Williams at all.  Even pre-game.  Owens was there.  Funny thing was they had Q&A for players on the center court screen and asked players their New years resolution - Owens said to gain 30 lbs !!!!

Ellison was much improved today.  Yakwe solid but his FT form is still painful to watch.  Mussini was non-existent and Sima got pushed around by Goesselle.  Johnson was hot early then gets into ball hog mode and takes every shot he can.
Mussini was not non existent. He was taken out of the game. Just like he will be for the next 17 games.

I was at the game and noticed that because I was pissed that he got a Technical, thinking it was going to be his 4th personal as well, but they never put it up. I also found it odd that it was only 1 FT for Creighton. I always thought all Technical Fouls in college ball were 2 shots.

You're right.  That is very different from Ncaa womens and Iaabo.

They were quicker on the perimeter and were stronger in the interior.  Our offense is messy because we lack a true pg.  as for effort, I didn't see the lack of effort that others are complaining about.  Our young guys were just outplayed by their more experienced lineup.  Growing pains.

Agree on the pg. The biggest thing we are missing is a quarterback on offense. That's not the strength of Mussini or Ellison. We are also missing perimitter scoring but help is on the way in a big way next year. I think the defensive intensity could be improved a bit. Sometimes they look a bit lazy on their rotations but that's just my opinion. The general effort of the guys has been there I think for the most part.

Growing pains? I am tired of reading things like that. We didn't play a good team. This creighton team is an ok mid major. We didn't totally suck which can be taken as a positive. But we are still considerably worse then the 8th place team conference. Without Johnson and Felix that game is a 30 point loss. Felix and Durand aren't playing next year. And yes I realize Johnson wasn't that good.

I can understand Yakwe and Sima getting beat on defense. But I want guys out there who can not only score but guys who take defense seriously, and set the tone for how hard everyone should play. In theory, I like something Mullin did. Balamou hustles. He should have started. Yakwe, Ellison and Mussini need to look to at least one player on our team who is setting the tone for the kind of intensity we should be putting into our defense. Offensively, I get it. No point guard. But that excuse doesn't ruin every aspect of the game. They can d up. So, this season should be used to show them how.

Without Groselle and Watson, they lose.  I don't really get that argument.  We didn't play a great team.  We played a decent team.  One that is better than us.  It's gonna be a long and difficult season.  You may not want to hear that, but that is reality.

I just see pains. I don't see much growing. ItWe lose 3 guys this year. We have 4 coming in. How much better will we be next year? This team not only has no Pg, they have no SG either. Are ponds and Ahmed going to be big east STARTING players next year?  We have a long way to go just to get decent. Nothing I saw yesterday showed me a path to that.

I was at the game yesterday and the inexperience and immaturity cost them the game. Also Mullin is very cheap with his timeouts, he should start calling them when the team needs them in the second half.

To me every game you see some players improve and some players regress. It's all a learning experience. I didn't expect Ellison to have a good game after his last couple disasters. But he looked really good. This is just stuff that is going to happen this year. When you're playing with rookie players and rookie coaches.

On to the next one, I'll be watching.

LoVett, Ponds and Ahmed are better than anyone on the team now. So, I'd expect them all to start. Johnson and M'vouika aren't making the guys around them better players. They are too limited in their skill set. Ahmed is big dude. Definitely as big as Anthony Mason Jr. He could start up top with Yakwe and Sima.

A team that starts LoVett, Ponds, Ahmed, Yakwe and Sima. Comes down to what Yakwe and Sima learn this year, combined with what Mullin has planned for them in the off season. Norm Roberts had nothing planned for his players. Lavin has luxurious European vacations. What will Mullin do?

Mussini can score and shoot very well and not handling the pg duties will free him up for that that. Ellison had a nice game and has been injured so I think we can look to continue to see him grow into his game. Sima is very talented but still very raw, he will be much better next year and the year after that. Yakwe is very raw and will be very good in my opinion when he refines his game a bit. Then we have three 4 star recruits coming in next years. That's an extremely solid core if you ask me but I guess time will tell. I think we are a middle of the pack team next year and a very good team the following year but again these things are hard to predict. I'm just saying you can't get down a on a team that returned no player from the past seasons. This was always going to be an ugly year.

I think most of us expected this to be an ugly season. I think what get some of us frustrated sometimes is like Poison mentioned the lack of commitment to defense. I don't care if we don't score as much but I thought that if anything the team would kind of have an identity on defense.
