Is this the first time that a conference led by a female won a NCAA championship?

What has to happen now is that the rest of the conference needs to step up (especially SJU) or the BE may not be taken serious again. This is where Football helps covers up the deficiencies of the other conferences. Nova is only 1-2 in the BET, but I can see critics saying that they are the only "real" basketball program in the conference. It would help if somebody else becomes regular season champs as well, and of course more teams advancing farther.

The BE would be fine if St.John's and Depaul towed the line. Both have been a disgrace.

You are so dramatic.  The new big east has been in existence for 3 years.  We were a bubble team year 1, a tourney team year 2 and then this year we obviously sucked.  Not that disgraceful but need to be consistent.

Yes we did not do our part for years but that was in the much better BE which was so good they didn't even need us to be better.  Now they do.  Hopefully we do our part.

We have not won a tourney game in 16 years. Since Lou retired, we've underachieved in every single season, except for two that the hated Mike Jarvis coached. We are not pulling our weight, but feel free to call me a troll because I'm objective.

The BE has always needed us to be good. Our president had other plans.

The BE did damn fine with out us being good from 2001 to 2013.  Not sure what league you were watching.

Correct.  The NEW BE does need SJU however I think we all agree.  Villanova's win last night was great but it shows more about where Villanova is then where the BE is.  In other words Villanova is the clear class of the league by a mile.

UNC will always be good but think about this, you had Syracuse in the Final 4, Duke won the Tourney last year, Louisville was a missed FT away from going last year to the Final 4, ND is the only team to go to the Elite 8 the last 2 years and arguably the best team in the league the last 3 years was NONE of those teams-Virginia.  Think about that, that is serious depth and strength.  Nova would be just another really good team in the ACC whereas in the BE they are head and shoulders above everyone else.

And as I said earlier SJU's goal is to get to that level consistently.  Not go 10-8 or make 3 NCAA's in 4 years, get to NOVA's level.

Don't you think that's setting expectations a bit high? We don't even know if Mullin knows how to coach.

That's the goal and no it is not.  I don't understand your point.

Finding out whether Coach Muillin can coach has nothing to do with setting a goal.

And the point is you don't fire Lavin with 3 20 wins seasons and 2 NIT and 2 NCAA's so you can do WORSE?  The next step is to get to Nova's level and if you don't believe me go re-watch Mullin's press conference when he was introduced.

Congrats to Nova and Jay Wright. He is an outstanding coach. Its not easy to win the tourney, but its a lot easier when you have a plethora of McD's all Americans'. Not to take anything away from these so called "great coaches" but seriously, when you have all the talent aren't you suppose to win? Not when you go up against a better coach with capable players. Bobby Knight was a great coach. Wright > Coach K.

Did anyone stay with TBS to see crying Roy talk about
his wonderful team and say nothing about the team that
just beat them?  Gracious loser he's not, classless.

One thing that fails to get mentioned about this is the fact that the ACC has more schools, so they should have more great teams.  But they also have more bad teams.  If you look at average RPI they are only slightly better then us. And now we have the Championship team.  (Nova was ranked first at one point this year, also. So they're certainly no fluke).

Of course that is always going to be the case with oversized leagues.  That was the case when the Big East was 16 teams and you had Rutgers, DePaul, S Florida etc.  You're not going to have 16 Louisville's, Syracuse's, Duke's etc.  That league would literally be impossible.

The fact is the though the BE is essentially 1 team right now (Xavier had a good year this year as well).  Villanova is far and away the best team.  That is not the case with the ACC.

To be fair we underachieved under coach C, just at a much higher level.
I saw Coach C win a reg season and tournament championship in 83 with a point guard that couldn't make a layup.  A skinny 6'6" power forward that couldn't shoot.  Also, he almost always exceeded preseason coaches polling expectations.  How is that underachieving?  How would an underachieving coach make the Hall of Fame? To be fair?  Ridiculous.

The Big East had two great teams this year; X and Nova.  PC died but SH came on strong, but then had a killer matchup in the NCAA tournament. (Although they obviously cheated, but there is no document to prove it.)  But you have to average the good teams with the bad teams.  And when you do this, they are only slightly better then us.  Between 2010 and 2013, we were better then the ACC from top to bottom.  It's just a fact. (Our average ratings were much higher then them).

The thing that bothers me is when ESPN acts like the Big East  is no more. Says it.  To me, THIS, is the OLD, BE.  Who were the three schools in 85' that made the Final Four?  Right.  Are they still in the conference?  Yes.  Did we have Football then?  No.  So to me THIS is the OLD BE.  In fact the conference has always been in flux.  Ever since the beginning. This is a deliberate attempt at hyperbole to drive the BE out of high major status.  In fact they were probably behind the breakup itself. It may be backfiring on them, though, as Fox now has a good property.  But ESPN and CBS really have to stop this "Requiem for the BE" attitude.  Their job is to be objective, but they're prostituting themselves out.  This is what they are saying on the other BE boards, and I agree.

I just re-read your post.  Can't believe it.  Even you are drinking the ESPN Kool Aid.  Why don't you call the SEC a one team league.  Why don't you go pick on them for a while.  Look at their average numbers. Can't believe it.  We got six teams in last year.  In the last three years, we have gotten fifteen berths out of a possible 30.  It's a great league, and there's no way around that.  The top four out of 32, every year the last three years.

This is true. For those of us around in the 70s, 80s and 90s; St Johns was an underperformer. Lou got us to the NCAAs. But it was once a decade we really did something; 1979 w the Reggie Carter/Wayne McCoy team that lost to Penn. 1985; and the 1991 team w Malik Sealy/Werdann Elite Eight team Otherwise, a lot of 1-and-done.

Underachieved means you failed to reasonably live up to your talent and skill level.  No way SJU has done that every year except for 2.  Baloney.

You want to argue Jarvis, Norm or Lavin should have positioned SJU with more talent in those years they were lousy that's fair but for the most part when SJU has been bad the past 2 decades it is because they simply were never any good especially with talent.

Actually the SJU program was always strong prior to 1995.  The recruiting was strong, getting a good percentage of the NY kids when NY hoops ruled the country.  The program was a top 5 program historically till the disastrous strip club controversy.  Of course, the last 20 years have been a disaster.  The SJU records in the NIT were outstanding prior to the NCAA putting a hit on the tournament by continually expanding.  For those of you who don't know, prior to the 70s the NCAA only took one team from each conference, the winner of the end of the year tourney (except the big 10 who had no torney)  The NIT usually had had a slew of teams from the power conferences, even more so when there were a few upsets in the various torneys.  Other than UCLA, the NIT usually had a stronger field and championships were harder to come by.

Many people don't know that before the NCAA tourney and even during its early years the NIT champion was the national champs, which SJU had  a couple I believe. But unfortunately nowadays nobody seems to count it,.

I'm talking about in the 40 s when an NIT championship was the national championship, before the NCAA tourney got hot.
