I dont believe Mullin was interested, so big $ Alumns are going to have to drop a huge nut to get Pitino. Looks like he wants to come. So does Hurley. Masiello is 3rd option I would say. Some great options there, going to be a great week
-
Isn't Pittino busy right about now and all of last week?

Not busy enough to talk about St Johns

I can't buy that Pitino would listen unless we make him the richest coach in the country which we can't do. Can't see Louisville not stepping up to make sure they keep him if there was a significant push by any other school.
Also, does Hurley at some point get tired of it dragging along and the school looking elsewhere or does he want the job that badly that he will take it no matter what?
-

Nobody knows what that means

Baldi, do you think Hurley will be able to recruit effectively outside the NY Metro area?

He got E.C Matthews to come to Rhode Island

better root for louisville to lose just to be on the safe side. lol

Dave you hearing a change with Mullin? He's my top choice with Hurley as 1A

Definitely can't hurt to go after Pitino, however they should only do it if they're looking to pay a coach 6 mil a year like he's getting at Louisville, which they won't be able to do. No need to half ass it, only do it if you're serious. Even if they were, it's hard to see him leaving.

I think you're wrong about Mullin Baldi.
I think the job is his. But we'll see

would you rather have cloudy with a chance of meatballs ? :)

It's exciting when Baldi and Desco disagree. When do you guys think we'll know something definitive?

Not the 1 I had in mind. I think he poaches from local staff
-
How could we possibly be in good shape? We have no coach and no players.
-
I think Mullin would do a job simply because he is such a hard worker with great attention to detail and knowledge of the game. It's still a little bit of a risk because he hasn't coached before and nobody knows how he would adapt to all of the nuances, including going out and recruiting which is the lifeblood of a program. Plus if things go awry, mit becomes very difficult to fire your program's golden boy
I'd love Danny Hurley. Those Hurley's were born into coaching and recruiting so they know every corner. Danny Hurley would be a great choice imo. I think Hurley is the best and safest choice for the job most likely. I think that while Mullin could really be a home run, Hurley has the whole package and is ready to go.

We'll have several good options among local assistants.
-
why do i get a sense that besides repole money, its in the best interest of Fox and the BE to have a big splash at SJU. maybe there is money coming in we don't know about. and just maybe the school is thinking they can use the interest in the program and to finally upgrade the facilities. Maybe it goes hand in hand?

We did upgrade the facilities. 1/5 of the seats have backs.
-
that made me laugh, first time i took my son to CA he said to me. ' for 50k per year per student, they can't afford real seat?" :P
-
Bathrooms also don't smell like piss, like they used to. You can also buy really bad nachos at the top of the gym. What are you guys expecting? This is NY's team. Alumni hall was also the first arena making fans go through metal detectors. Definitely adds to the experience.

Texas A&M is spending $450mil on a new stadium for students not to sit all on the bleachers. A lot of college stadiums only have bleachers.
CA is like a Springsteen song, "You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright, oh, that's allright with me".

Danny Hurley has agreed to a six-year restructured deal at Rhode Island, sources told ESPN. Has been in the works.
-
Danny did. I don't think it makes a difference though.
-
So is Mullin coming or should I puke?
-
Hurley just signed an extension.
Bobby Hurley, just to clarify...this article also said he's still going to interview with DePaul. Just based on what I've seen printed it seems like Danny Hurley is the guy St. John's is looking more closely at anyway.

With Rhode Island's Danny Hurley signing a new 6-year deal, it's safe to take him off board for St. John's, source told ESPN.

wow so they both did?
guess we're getting no one again
-
Catholic school--will have to be done by Wednesday or it won't be until after Easter which would be worst thing that could happen for recruiting.
Maybe Mullin likes front office jobs--make him the AD as he would be great at fundraising for the University and wouldn't have to put up with BS of coaching

Maybe Bobby gets involved now that his brother is out.
-
so st john's only option at this point out of everyone realistic is someone who's never coached
awesome!

GoodmanESPN
DePaul has agreed to deal in principle with Dave Leitao, sources told ESPN. He will return to Chicago
Bobby is not going to Chicago.
-
Perhaps Danny made his deal because he heard Mullin is 99 pct coming. I'm not gonna start getting worried until our choices are only mas or Cluess.

True...I am afraid about Mullin never coaching before but at least he is a great name with a high IQ, if he brings the right staff he could do well
-

Bet Pacers fans felt the same way when Larry Bird became their coach. Certain guys with amazing bball iqs who have been around basketball their entire lives don't need prior experience to succeed at coaching. They just surround themselves with the right people, are workaholics, and basketball geniuses. Larry may be on a pantheon level but Mullin is up there when it comes to bball iq, success in all things basketball, workaholic etc.

yeah I mentioned that in a follow up post
there's definitely potential, but it's an unknown...still would obviously be better than a Cluess
-
I def share some of your concerns dan just have so much faith Mullin will do what needs to to succeed and don't think any other realistic option could energize the fan base as much as him.
Also I know most of these are NBA guys but lots of guys w no coaching experience have succeeded. Bird, Doc, Kerr, Hoiberg...even our maligned mark Jackson did pretty darn well.
In Chris we Trust.

Would it be such a bad thing to hire a coach who is actually an x an o guy?
-

That's the first thing I thought when I heard about him signing an extension. Have no inside information but why wouldn't Bobby wait to hear what SJU had to say before signing that extension unless he knows the job is not open. Seemed like he had interest but may be not also.
-

St. John's should hire Hurley Sr., pay him twice what he is making now and donate the rest to keep St. Anthony's afloat. Win-win for everybody.
-
I don't think signing an extension means he's out of the running necessarily. Didn't someone do the same last year and then jumped jobs? I mean, it very well might, but it isn't automatic.
Pitino talk ramping up. I just can't see it. I would lose my mind, but zero expectations.
Give me Mullin/ Slice combo. Will reek havoc on NYC/NJ recruiting. Gotta grab a good xo guy also. Mullin has enough connects to put together a ridic staff.
Then Danny.. If Danny's out I look to brother Bobby.
Cluess/Massiello last resort.

All these coaches should kick back some money to SJU for getting them extensions!
-
Maybe this signing is Hurleys way of telling St. John's to make a move asap

Or maybe he leveraged the St John's interest into an extension that he had been working on since February?
-

That's what I would choose, but high school recruits especially the locals need to be treated like every day is their super sweet sixteen birthday. Guys like Dunlap aren't butt kissers.

I see a lot of Louisville fans in tears. I wish the cameras would catch more of that. Hopefully, we'll see Duke fans crying soon. Not a pretty sight, even when they're happy.

No Mas! Lost 6 games to teams with a combined record of 66-123 this year.

Did you want a NY guy back on the bench only? Seems so with your pushing for Mas or Hurley. Wanted Hurley, but very happy we got Chris, should be pretty interesting.

No Cluess. To coach a team that defensively inept elimates you.
No Masiello. Annoying, whiny lunatic on the sidelines.
The whole conference is sh*t. We gotta be able to do better.

Let Massiello get his next Coaching gig and put together a string of good years. After Mullin he may be ready, would nice to keep future coaches with NYC roots.
