Look I'm not giving up yet.  But this was incredibly disappointing.  And I get it Lovett hurts but they have had 5 games without him, they should be able to have a decent game plan and rotation with adjustments.

Bottom line is they got punched in the mouth by PC and had no answer.  That is not good.

They better be ready to play hard the next two games or they will be 0-3 in a hurry...

BTW remember when I said the unusual thing about them going 7-11 last year was that the 11 losses were not competitive, well they are 0-1 and it was not competitive at least for most of the 2nd half.  That is still a major issue.  Just getting whipped in your losses.

One game doesn't dictate the season. Pitiful showing, plenty of time to turn it around. Need to get Lovett back and the staff has to adapt better in game. That being said, providence shot the lights out, that'll happen.

A) Lovett may not play again this season for all we know. That is a definite possibility
B) The staff has had 2 and a half years to be better at in-game adjustments. If they didn't pick it up yet they won't miraculously pick it up sometime in the next 2 months
C) Providence shot the lights out because we let them shoot wide open 3s all game. Big East players will shoot the lights out when the defense during games is equal to the defense during pre-game shootaround

Noted. Might as well start resting the guys for next season.

If you don't think the staff has gotten better you haven't been watching the games this year, but there are areas they can and will improve on.

This is the only staff in the country that wouldn't play zone with 7 players.

+1
I agree, i' d like to see us switch defenses for stretches.

But a zone wont cure our problems tonight.  We have 3-4 guys who don't want to close out.    That will only make things worse if they do that in a zone. Even if we really played a zone if you don't closeout......

We basically played zone tonight. Guys just played an area. Area right in front of them but an area. No matter what D we played you have to put in an effort.

You insinuated that if the staff adapts better in-games then we can turn it around. The staff has improved but that improvement has been gradual. They won't just flip a switch and be able to make genius in-game adjustments this season, and few coaches do that anyway

Even before tonight when the team was playing well and had some momentum, it was going to be difficult to hope for better than 2-4 in the next 6 games. If this team isn't 0-3 then 2-5 it will be a minor miracle. That's why this game was so important. 3-4 you can easily come back from, 2-5 not so much

I don't think they need to make any genius in game adjustments. We don't need an X'sand O's savant, the staff just needs to make the obvious changes.

I do think that Lovett back and healthy is more important than that and understanding that good teams (esp up and coming good teams) will have bad losses in the course of a long season and will probably blow out a decent team in time as well.

What did I say that was incorrect though? Even before tonight did you think we were winning @SHU, @Creighton, vs Nova or @Xavier? Sure, maybe we could have gotten lucky and stole one of those games but surely you couldn't have expected to win any of those games. Those 4 games are 4 of the 5 toughest conference games we have.

Even with losing those 4 games we still would have been on track to meet expectations as long as we took care of business in the games we should win, which we didn't tonight

Tough second half to watch, no top 20 defense tonight.
The open 3's were a killer tonight.  Burst my bubble.
Ponds looked like he was hurting most of the game.

Tip of the hat to Cartwright, played a near perfect game & clearly ran the point in Sherman Douglas mode. Screening & cutting exhibition tonight by PC, clearly well prepared tonight.

I think people are making a big deal about the first lousy game we’ve played this year. We have a lot to address, but it’s still one game.

And there are no must wins in December.

If the goal this year is to make the NIT then sure this wasn't a must-win game. If the goal is to make the NCAA tournament this was a must-win. With how strong the conference is you absolutely have to beat Providence, Marquette, Butler, Gtown and Depaul at home

Sold out crowd and CA was practically silent, even up through halftime while it was close.  Could almost count the cheering student section.

Brutal game to be in attendance for.

Well were going to find out about this team and more importantly this staff very quickly.

Remember one of the big knocks on Lavin was the poor starts in League play.  In 12-13 they started 1-3, in 13-14 they started 0-5 and 14-15 after an 11-1 start they started 0-3.

The SJU defense has been leaving shooters open all season. If Grand Canyon or St. Joe's had a shooter they would've lost both games. Providence didn't miss tonight. They ran the same back screens and the team didn't adjust once. I'm hoping they bounce back, but this was a terrible loss.

BTW if you think PC players dont remember the cooley-mullin staredown last season? This team was ready , we weren't. Can't have owens go for pumps fakes and sit the whole first half.

Right, of course it would be worse if the person writing this actually cared about SJU.
