Williams has definitely showed more upside. However I would take Dixon over Trimble. He has been frustrating to watch.

I would take Dixon over Trimble for next year, but I take Trimble all day long over Dixon this year. He's a strong kid and he has guarded 1-4 well in my mind. He can switch on a PG or a PF and hold his own. Dixon couldn't guard anyone.

Trimble is a fanastic depth piece for a wing dominated team that switches 1-5. There will be times this year that he has to defend PFs in big spots. The kid doesn't give an inch in the paint and he always seems to come down with huge contested rebounds in big spots.

Mack looks legit to me. He can do a lot of things well. He’s a strong finisher. A bully point guard. Perfect for the BE. He won’t be alone. Figueroa will be ready to be a star after adding 15 lbs of muscle over the summer.

Mack looks good to me as well but he will need time to adjust to this level like most transfers.

I called this pretty early and you are only now admitting he was terrible defensively.
BTW me calling it effort and lack of physical / athleticism is better than you basically saying he was stupid ;)

Hahaha I think he just had a low basketball IQ. He could be a smart kid in real life.

I mean the kid is 2.5 years into his college career...he's been here under Mullin for a year and a half...and he can't double the post or rostate without thinking about it for a full second? Williams is a true freshman and he's processing these things 2-3x faster and showing a much better grasp of defensive concepts.

Dixon seemed to hustle to me. I have no tolerance for kids that don't get into defensive position fast enough.

I will give you a "lack of awareness" on rotating and getting out on shooters. Possible explanation no doubt. But he also went around screens like guy setting the screen was wearing a bomb. I know he was rail thin but still........

How can you pencil Mack in as the starting PG next year when he has yet to play one minute of D1 basketball? Oh right cause it aligns with the narrative, pretty presumptuous. The staff knew he was leaving which is why he played less not that he fell out of favor. As you stated, Dixon may have a higher opinion of himself which makes him more vulnerable to be pushed out.

So your theory is that the staff pushed out the 6th man microwave who was going to be the lead guard next year. Makes a lot of sense, stick with that.

I'm not happy about it as I generally prefer upper classman to under classman unless they're of the ilk that Puke and Kentucky get that we don't.

We're now 1 player loss away from being woefully shorthanded yet again and you know that's coming soon as afterall - We Are....

Kid was shooting 47% from the field and 44% from three and while slight, was lightning quick. His lack of hustle and defensive deficiencies were largely exaggerated figments of Wasju's over active imagination. Yes, he's a better defender than Michigan.

The backup point is now a player that some of the boards more knowledgable basketball minds describe as a 4/5.

The first choice of a "scoring" option off the bench is now a guard shooting 31% from the field and 29% from three ( 47/44 minus 31/29 - divide by two carry the one...is a lot ) that's reticent to dribble or drive and a leaper/slasher that doesn't appear to be a microwave zone buster.

Once way back I was leaving the garden and saw Dexter Grey by himself getting into a cab.  I thought to myself, he didn't even have enough time to take a shower; and doesn't he have to take the bus back to Queens with the rest of team? He was never seen from again.  I didn't like it then and I don't like it now.

Note to Mikey:
The Great Danes would be a perfect landing spot.

Cost benefit analysis. They needed a ship. They put some feelers out there and he bit. Would they have preferred someone else? Probably. But with Ponds playing 38 minutes a game in BE play and Williams ability to guard more positions his lose could be absorbed.

Came out after every missed defensive assignment and his minutes disappeared.  Thankfully Chris Mullin was paying attention. You simple were not watching. Honestly hard for me to take anyone serious basketball wise that did not pick up on Dixon's poor defense. Was pretty glaring.
Normally I am pretty understanding when it comes to defense and will take offense over D every day as long as the person's offense makes up for his defensive deficiency.
That was not the case with Dixon who was a tremendous liability.

Look at SH game. Dixon did his best to get a struggling Powell going. Uncontested 3, blow by layup and foul on 3 of 4 possessions. Dixon came out and was never heard from again. That is just most recent case. This was alarming early in season.

I agree. This notion that Dixon fell out of favor with the staff is hard for me to swallow. He’s a redshirt sophomore playing his first year in the BE. That is what development is for. Trimble was horrible defensively last year, he still struggles in space but has improved his physicality.

Didn't appear glaringly bad to me and certainly better than a freshmen Ponds or Mussini.  Were any of the points I made on point?

Are you suggesting the staff just recently came to this revelation? He’s been practicing with them for a year and a half! They knew and he still played over Trimble and Williams because he can score and back up Ponds.

Some of you simply are not watching the games.
Even in a game earlier when he was having a decent game offensively, he was taken out after a bad defensive lapse. I think right before half when he ran off a shooter with clock expiring. Someone on the boards mentioned Mullin pulled him over and Dixon looked annoyed for being called out.
This team has scorers. Trimble plays harder and does some intangible stuff. Williams is way better.
Kid was going to lose his minutes so he decided to leave.

I would have preferred Dixon stay obviously and think he definitely would have had a nice role here over the next 2.5 seasons but if he was going to be the lead guard next year then we'd be in some really big trouble.

I think he was expected to be a scorer off the bench whose offensive ability was greater than his defensive liability. Turned out that while he does have a decent offensive game, it wasn't as good as expected and not good enough to even out his defensive liability. If we were a zone team that wouldn't be the case but by playing man and essentially switching 1-5 on D, it's impossible to hide defensive liabilities. Teams would eventually just screen for their best player until Dixon was on him and then have him go at Dixon one on one.

No, he was given a shot and looked over matched. And whether it was lack of heffort or instincts it was not getting better. If Dixon played better Trimble would have been left on bench. Trimble was given minutes because of Dixon deficiencies. Then once Willimas started getting time....Dixon's time was going to go away.

I agree that he was not cutting it although you can't judge a player 240 minutes into his SJ career and wish he had not transferred. But beyond that, I find it impossible to believe that in the most important season in his tenure, on the verge of being ranked, two games into the BE season Mullin threw overboard an allegedly valuable piece to the puzzle in favor of some three star PF who hasn't yet set foot on campus and can't contribute for 12 months, if he ever does. If that's what happened, they should fire him on general principles.

You think the staff “gave him a shot” at a clip of 17 minutes a game? So why isnt Roberts, Earlington, or Williams given the same “shot”. He brought offensive value and that’s why he got the playing time, not given a shot. It was recently reduced because they knew he was leaving.

He was a transfer who had success, albeit at lower division. He was first in pecking order above 3 freshman that were not huge recruits. Understandable.
He was leaving because he was not going to play. In limited mins in both games he played poorly. If he would have knocked down a three or two or played adequate D he would have played more.

They rotated 6 guys on Powell including a true freshman. Dixon was eaten alive and Powell's eyes lit up when he had him...he was objectively and very noticeably the worst guy to guard him--including Trimble who did give him a wide open layup. He was a complete liability.

Williams was strong, long, and athletic enough to guard Powell and to completely deny him for several minutes--although to be fair Powell did beat him for a bucket when he got the ball and was iso'd.

As Fun pointed out we've got 5 microwaves starting. What we need from the bench is defense and size. Dixon provided neither.

I think his outside shot was underutilized. The only way we will need him this year is if Ponds gets hurt and the game(s) would be lost in those situations any way.

We can beat a press with Ponds out using 3-4 guys who can all make a few dribbles and passes. Trimble has made one mistake in two years in that situation that I've seen.

I'm okay with Simon facilitating a few minutes a game with some help.

WASJU doesnt see the difference between calling a someone a bad defender and saying someone has the worst effort he has ever seen. He was a bad defender, no one has said he was a good defender. The kid absolutely tried.
