Scott Adubato.

http://www.zagsblog.com/2010/04/09/lavin-to-meet-friday-with-adubato/

St. John’s coach Steve Lavin is still filling out his staff and will meet Friday with former Seton Hall assistant Scott Adubato, a source with direct knowledge said.

Adubato spent four years at Seton Hall under Bobby Gonzalez, who was fired last month. Before that he was a scout for five years under Mike Fratello with the Memphis Grizzlies.

A New Jersey native and the son of former NBA and WNBA head coach Richie Adubato, Adubato is respected and connected in the Garden State. He recruited Kyrie Irving to Seton Hall and kept the Pirates in the mix with the McDonald’s All-American until the end. He remains close with several uncommitted 2010 recruits, including Jonathan Graham, a 6-8 senior power forward from Baltimore (Md.) Calvert Hall, and the former UConn commit Cleveland Melvin, a 6-8 big man from Fitchburg (Mass.) Notre Dame Prep.
Adubato has also met several times with new Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard, who has one spot remaining on his staff.

Adubato is also associated with Gonzalez, who was dismissed under a dark cloud after four stormy years at Seton Hall.

Prospective bosses would need to decide whether Adubato’s experience and connections outweigh his association with Gonzalez.

As for St. John’s, Lavin has formally hired just one assistant, former Drexel assistant Tony Chiles, but appears close to bringing in former Oregon associate head coach Mike Dunlap.

The Oregonian reported that Dunlap is “on the verge of joining Steve Lavin’s staff at St. John’s,” but apparently some financial issues need to be worked out.

Adubato? Is this the guy with NJ connections that we want?  The Bobby Gonzalez stench maybe too much to overcome.  Or is he the guy that knocked him out?

Tony Chiles officially announced as assistant coach

http://www.redstormsports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/040910aaa.html

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's head men's basketball coach Steve Lavin announced today that Tony Chiles will join the Red Storm staff as an assistant coach. A veteran coach with ties to the New York area, Chiles' successful coaching career has included stints at Manhattan, Iona and Drexel, as well as two conference championships and four postseason appearances.

"Tony is as talented, capable and respected as any assistant coach in the country," said Lavin. "After delving through all the information during the search process for my staff, it became clear that Coach Chiles would be a perfect first choice as an assistant coach."

Chiles comes to STJ after spending the past six seasons at Drexel, where he was responsible for national recruiting, working with the guards and individual player development. Assisting with pregame scouting reports and game-day coaching, Chiles helped guide the Dragons to a Postseason NIT appearance in 2005 - his first season with the team - and to the semifinals of the Preseason NIT in his second year.

Prior to working at Drexel, Chiles was an assistant coach at Iona College under former NBA All-Star Jeff Ruland, helping lead the Gaels to consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships, two NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of 20-win seasons. In his six-year tenure, he was instrumental in Iona's reemergence as one of the nation's top mid-major programs, developing strategies that enabled the Gaels to win 60 percent of their games. As the recruiting coordinator, he was responsible for landing prominent New York City talent, which included eight scholarship players from the New York Metropolitan area on the 2002-03 roster.

Chiles got his college coaching start at Manhattan College under Fran Fraschilla. In three seasons with the Jaspers, he assisted with recruiting, advanced scouting, bench coaching and individual player development. When Fraschilla left Manhattan to become head coach at St. John's, Chiles took over interim head coaching duties. Chiles played a major role in managing the community service activities of the team and the academic progress of the student-athletes.

A 1989 graduate of Columbia University, Chiles earned a degree in political science. A member of Columbia's Dean's List, Chiles was a four-year letterwinner and started at point guard for three seasons. Chiles still holds the school's single-game assist record with 19 against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and is second on Columbia's all-time assist list with 323. He played his high school ball at All Hallows, leading his team to the New York City and New York State Championships in 1985. He was the valedictorian of his senior class.

He's waiting on Colorado.  I read somewhere that he is moving his family back to Colorado regardless if he takes the Colorado or of if he takes the STJ job.  His son will be a senior in high school and he wants him to finish up there.  They still have their house there.

I think Colorado gives the job to the current associate head coach.  It makes NO SENSe to pass him up with his awesome resume and close connection to the current team.

I believe Bzdelik is leaving his staff behind as well.

I think Dunlap might still be waiting on Oregon a little.  They're running out of names.

Dunlap, 53, comes off two one-year stints as an assistant coach at Arizona and Oregon. He is considered a candidate for the Oregon head-coaching job and has interviewed for an associate position at St. John's under newly hired head coach Steve Lavin, the former ESPN analyst.

"But Colorado is the job I really want," Dunlap said this morning. "This is home."

The Denver area has remained the home base for the Dunlap family the past two years while he coached in the Pac-10. Dunlap led Metro State to national titles in 2000 and 2002. Three years ago, while an assistant with the Nuggets, Dunlap was considered a finalist for the CU job before withdrawing his name several weeks before Jeff Bzdelik was hired.

I wonder how our salary for associate is in comparison to the head coaching gig at Colorado.

man, i hope Colorado does not hire him...hes the biggest piece of the puzzle for the coaching staff...getting the most out of the kids you end up getting and having them play good basketball can be more important than actual recruiting, especially in a program where you arent guaranteed top classes every year

Colorado players are outspoken and even threatening about McClain succeeding Bzedlik.
IMO the only way Dunlap gets the job is if he keeps McClain as his #2 man. UC could throw McClain a few more bucks to hang on to him and pacify the players at the same time.

No way McClain plays #2 to a guy that never coached D-1 as head coach before.  His resume is way too impressive.  I'm actually shocked that McClain hasn't received more looks as a head coach after averaging 20 wins a year at Wyoming and even winning an NCAA tournament game (was it Syracuse they beat?).
