That being said, I have no problem with Jay Williams on staff. He is after all the author of the single most satisfying CLANK in the history of DeWk hating, a choke for the ages that cost the Blue Nipples a national championship. As far as I'm concerned they should put his face on Mount Rushmore.

You forget to mention that his "choke" free throw that could have tied the game against Indiana in the Sweet 16 - a game that should never have been close - came after hitting a 3 pointer WHILE getting fouled.  You also forget to mention that Boozer got the rebound and put up a pathetic follow up shot that would have won.

Don't put it on Jay Williams - the greatest Duke player of the last decade - and one of the greatest college guards of all time.  He has a national title in his book as well.  As well as a whole hoard of highlights including the singlehanded comeback against Maryland in College Park.  Jay was a 66% FT shooter that year - or so - just because someone misses one FT when it counts doesn't make them unclutch.  Jay proved he was clutch his whole career.

That's a lot more detail than I care to recall. POTY CLANK is much easier.

I think if a kid had verballed to SJU, and then called Coach K asking if he would take him, Coach K, would say, no thanks,
you should stay where you are.

Duke, for all of the undeserving attention their overrated players and fans get, has a pretty classy coach.

Calhoun is a paper bag. Always has been.

You can't seriously believe I'm going to watch whatever ACC related crap that is. Who cares. (Although I'll admit that I was intrigued at first because I thought that "Miracle Minute" referred to a DeWkiE managing to last 60 seconds with a woman.) Now OTOH if you posted a video of Kruschnewski being chased up up a clock by the farmer's wife wielding a carving knife, I'd be all eyes.

Can't make everyone happy.  If you don't interview someone they get pissed.  If you interview someone and they don't get hired they get pissed and say why bother interviewing me.

I think that is why he is concentrating on current college coaches ...Grasso/Slice/Leitao/Book.  But in the end I think it would be good to give a HS/AAU coach an opportunity to prove himself on this level.  Even if its the DOBO job.  It may cause some jealousy to start but I think...at the end of the day...most would be happier that someone got an opportunity.  The people that do truly get upset by it...you were never going to make them happy anyway.

http://www.wlfi.com/dpp/sports/Keady-likely-to-join-St.-John's-staff

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Sources tell WLFI that former Purdue basketball coach Gene Keady will join St. John's basketball in an advisory position, reuniting with new Red Storm head coach Steve Lavin.

Keady, who retired from Purdue in 2005, has most recently been a coaching assistant with the NBA's Toronto Raptors and has also served as an analyst for the Big Ten Network.

Lavin, who was a graduate assistant at Purdue under Keady, agreed Tuesday to become the head coach at St. John's.

IMO, I'd stay away from any of the current high school and AAU coaches.  As, you said....  Lavin should concentrate on current college coaches (head and assistant) and go from there.

We also agree on the DOBO position....  That is the only position where I might consider hiring one of the high school or AAU guys.

By the way, I bolded the coaches you mentioned, as that is the staff I'm hoping Lavin garners.

Patsos from Loyola not coming.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/college/basketball/mens/bal-patsos0402,0,4196925.story

Jimmy Patsos' flirtation with the Big Apple turned out to be brief. The Loyola coach said this morning he has declined an opportunity to join Steve Lavin at St. John's and will remain in Baltimore.

"I'm very lucky to be at Loyola, and I really want to coach at Loyola," Patsos said. "I think the future is really bright, and we're on the verge of being really good."

Lavin was named St. John's coach on Wednesday. On Thursday, Patsos met with his former boss, Maryland coach Gary Williams, in Indianapolis at the Final Four to gain perspective. Williams essentially told Patsos he needed to stay at Loyola.

"The only person I went to for advice was Gary," Patsos said. "He explained to me very quickly why I have a good situation at Loyola. He said 'You have a great job, you've done a great job.'"

Patsos attended a meeting of Division I coaches in Indianapolis this morning, then planned to return to Baltimore to meet with Loyola's new director of athletics, Jim Paquette, and attend the Greyhounds' lacrosse game on Saturday.

"I want to let the new AD know how happy I am to be at Loyola," Patsos said.

Shabazz Napier is a name to watch for.

Shabazz Napier just committed to Uconn per Zags.

Carmine - are you cool with a Pukon guy (Leitao) but not a Dukie?

Saying we don't want coaches who played or coached at the most successful schools in the biz is the kind of mickey mouse attitude that has held us down for the last 20 years.

No Pukons or Pukies! Fandom is not a rational thing.

It's the smart thing to do, and if Lavin listens to the right people he will do it.

Cross doesn't really interfere with Lavin's ability to put his stamp on the staff, because Cross wasn't actually an assistant coach. Keep Cross where he is, give him an extra $25,000, and you make important people in the city happy.

There will be no room for big egos on the coaching staff that new St. John's coach Steve Lavin is assembling. He isn't interested in the petty politics or pecking orders.

"To get St. John's where it belongs we need people who want to be here and do whatever it takes," he told the Daily News. "This is going to be a group that pulls the oars in the same direction, that helps the program by helping each other. New York's team deserves nothing less."

He has scheduled an interview Saturday with Kimani Young, who heads the powerhouse New Heights AAU program. He has another with former Virginia coach Dave Leitao set for Monday.

Lavin is described as "a visionary" by his former assistant, Fresno Pacific coach Jim Scia. His vision for the Red Storm staff is beginning to take shape.

He wants a blend that includes the wisdom of head coaching experience with youthful aggressiveness. He wants multipurpose guys - tacticians, developers of talent and workout experts. And everybody - everybody - has to be able to recruit.

People involved with the New York recruiting scene will hold assistant positions as well as spots on the operations staff.

Lavin had a preliminary conversation with Manhattan coach Barry Rohrssen and was planning to speak with him again. He also talked to Loyola (Md.) coach Jimmy Patsos, but isn't sure if Patos would leave the Greyhounds. Patsos is in talks about a contract extension.

Also in the mix are ex-Boston University coach Dennis Wolff and Mike Dunlap, a superior tactician and developer of talent out of northern New Jersey. Dunlap twice won Division II national championships with Denver's Metro State and spent two seasons assisting George Karl with the Nuggets.

A year ago, Dunlap was Lute Olson's associate head coach at Arizona. He refused the interim role when Olson had to step down last year, but remained to oversee interim coach Russ Pennell as the Wildcats reached the NCAA Tournament.

"With other great recruiters, Dunlap could be a cog in a dangerous machine," another Big East coach said.

Houston assistant Jerry Hobbie, who starred at St. Patrick High (N.J.) and Fordham, is a possibility.

Hostra assistant Van Macon has already been interviewed. Drexel assistant Tony Chiles and former Villanova assistant Ed Pinckney could be brought in for a meeting soon.

"We'll have some good combination and a bunch of young turks working in the office," Lavin said. "This is going to be like Starbucks was or some dot-com. Buy in while you can because it's going up."

Coaches are like sharks.
UConn upped the pressure on him to commit, before Lavin made his pitch.

No Pukons or Pukies! Fandom is not a rational thing.
Fandom also means accepting any coach, as long as he helps the program win big.
Kentucky fans accepted WWW and Calipari, despite the fact his winning is as tainted as any coach working today. Most fans could almost care less if Lavin's hire was Ahmadinejad's personal basketball coach.
