twitter mentioned last night Herb Williams(?)  Wouldn't be a bad choice IMO.
i was thinking about herb williams...highly respected, a great get.  i'd say far fetched....but that's what i would have said about dunlap getting the bobcats job.

But why would he leave the Knicks asst. coaching job to be a college asst?

He hasn't gotten a head gig yet from where he is. . .

Dunlap is a huge exception. I don't think we will ever see a college asst. go straight into an NBA coaching job with no head coaching experience again for a while. Bottom line I think the Knicks asst job is far better than STJ asst job.
Technically was an assistant but in reality he was a head coach for 28 games last season.

This might make some of you happy but I would never root for the program again if they hired Tiny Morton - the man defines everything that is wrong with high school hoops in NYC.

The fact that he would publicly announce his candidacy as a PR ploy speaks volumes.  It puts coach Lav in a very awkward position to turn down a NYC coach.  no respectable coach would ever do that IMO.  specially not a day after the current coach resigns.  Tiny is way too polarizing and doesn't have the national reach our program needs.

Agree, plus he knows very well Lavin is recruiting Whitehead! Born opportunist!

I love Herb . . . but he's never going to get a head gig in the NBA, which is his dream. Say he came here for a year or two, and then got a head gig in college as a result of our success. Two years of success as a head man in college may change the perception of him.

I don't think he's on any short list Lavin has, and I don't think he'd come anyway, but if I were him I'd take a chance and make a two- to four-year college detour to enhance my pro aspirations. The worst that would happen would be that he bombs and someone hires him as an NBA assistant. He's respected around the league and would have little trouble moving back into his former role.

Why would we want Jim O'Brien and his baggage anywhere near this program (unless I'm remembering all the problems he had incorrectly)?

I'd think that if Herb wanted to do the college detour you are suggesting he'd try to land an appropriate mid-major head coaching job.  Remember, he has NBA head Coaching experience from his days as an interim after Lenny Wilkens resigned in '05.

Agreed.  Gimme a guy like Boylen, Gunning or some others who have worked both the NCAA and NBA frontline for a decade or two.  Lots of under appreciated talent out there who have really been around an can help a program.

What's Brian Nash up to these days? I remember people thinking he was a rising star in the coaching ranks.

Tiny has personally reached out to 3 local writers putting his name out there.

Does he think his chances improve by artificially creating his own candidacy?

Well, because apparently St. Johns Assistant is a better launching pad to NBA head coach than is Knicks Assistant!  :)

ARRRGHHHHHHHH!   Guys, don't YOU go spreading this same BS!!!!   Been on Bobcats boards trying to correct this perception all morning!!!

Mike Dunlap has been a Coach for 34 years.   EIGHTEEN of them have been as a college or pro HEAD COACH.    5 years at Cal Luthern University.   10 years at Metro State University (2 NCAA Championships, 2 National Coach of the Year awards).   3 years with the pro Aussie Leauge Adelaided 36rs.   He hasn't been just an assistant his last 3 jobs, he's been Associate Head Coach to Lute Olson, Ernie Kent and Steve Lavin.
