Daily news says possible 9 team league....xavier and st
 Louis.

Dayton and Butler over st Louis everyday of the week. I want 12

How would you get to 12 with no STL then?

Id take St louis if there the 12th, but I might rather have VCU instead. My opinion is that Dayton and Butler should get the nod over St louis, if its not going to be all of them.
*wipes ketchup from his eyes* - I guess Heinz sight isn’t 20/20.

Rome wasn't built in a day.  Let's make the break first, create a strong, bb-only conference among the no-brainer, first available schools of choice (e.g., Xavier, St. Louis), and take things from there.

My opinion is that Dayton and Butler are more a "no brainer" than St. Louis.

The basketball schools "fast break" is something I have wanted since the dissolution of the conference started.  I like the idea that the 7 Catholic schools can form their own league on this break out and still have the automatic bid and possibly retain the name.  I would like to cap the league at 10 so we could have a true home and home conference season something none of th FB conferences will ever be able to do again.  In today's NY Times there is an interesting article on the place of college BB to college FB and how FB is the dag that wags the tail and the only thing that counts in college basketball is March Madness.  Well maybe a BB conference could have a recruiting edge in that the BB players are the top dogs, not secondary to FB players.

At last the Basketball schools have taken the initiative and shown that they have basketBALLS!!!!
Sadly, it will go down as a reaction, not action by Beast leadership, or their lack of leadership.  The scramble may salvage a decent conference, but the damage has been done.  As long as enough good basketball schools form the 10-12 team conference, it'll be fine.  But all the unprecedented upheaval of the past 3-4 years will be stabilized soon.

I see the Big 7 (8 with Temple) being very selective when they "modify" the league.  I would jettison the previous blueprint and do as others said on this board.  Keep it tight, get it right.  "Who is at the helm of this ship?"

Is this the general consensus for the pool of 3 to 5 teams

Xavier
Butler
St Louis
Dayton
Creighton
VCU
Gonzaga
Richmond

My gut feeling is if you take Creighton then Gonzaga is going to be looked at heavily

I love Murray State but they add no value to the start up

No to St Joes as Nova would not want them - duplicate market
No to George Washington as G'Town would not want them  - duplicate market

Too bad no real match in Florida or Texas

On a side note, I couldn't be happier this happened

My contempt for Calgoon comes out with my Schadenfreude for UConn's Herbst:

From ESPN:
"UConn president Susan Herbst has contacted officials from the non-FBS Big East members, pleading with them to stay in the league, sources told ESPN.

Ironically, Herbst, along with Cincinnati and South Florida officials, heavily lobbied to get out of the Big East and join the ACC when the league had to replace Maryland.

"I know this may seem like a tough moment for our fans, but we need to focus on the fundamentals of academic success across the university and in our athletic program as well," Herbst said in a statement when Louisville, and not UConn, was selected by the ACC last month."

Ba ha ha ha hah!!!

I still think ACC loses more teams and Uconn gets invite eventually

I do too, personally UCONN will be the first to find a home but when all is said and done I think Cincinnati does too

South Florida, and Temple are in a really bad spot

I think Dick Weiss is reporting the news of 1979 when we were joining the Big East and leaving the ECAC, he just mixed up the name of our school Prez  :D

All South Florida and Temple and Memphis and UConn gotta do is realize their folly of fielding a fball team, drop the program and then we welcome them into our bball bossom with open arms.

I like a 9 or 10 team league. That gives you a perfect double round robin for a 16 or 18 game league schedule. I think rivalries ill be re-born and made anew by having every team at home every season. This is considering just basketball right now. If it doesnt work out for the other sports(not enough teams for a competitive league) 12 would be my second choice.

BE 7
Xavier
Butler
--------
Dayton
--------
St. Louis
VCU

Would be how I broke it down given my preffered options

There will be some teams that drop football after all this dust settles.  I am curious to see who they are.

Am I being very naive to think we should retain the name "Big East".  StJ's along with many of the BB schools were the original BE.

That is a priority, I'd believe.

I doubt it unless they are still left out in cold after 2013

Won't be now.  It will be once dust settles and teams see how things shake and how tough it is to build schedules and such.

Interesting observation.  Conn (the State) has spent many millions of state tax dollars to build FB stadium.  They will fight to get into a BCS conference.  But even further what will become of BCS in future--will the big boys (top 4 conferences) want all the money?  How will Temple ever compete with them?  Temple may have to admit that its FB is going "nowhere" and revert to the level that Nova plays at.  Temple is a good BB program; they have to wake up to reality.
