Some food for thought.  Below are the Catholic 7 with their total enrollment.  Next 3 are the slam dunk IMO.  Then there is a pool of East of Mississippi option and finally west coast options in case Gonzaga might need a partner in crime.  Again I think 12 is a good number to shoot at for a variety of reasons.

College          Market                Total
St. John's          New York                21000
Gtown          Washington DC        17000
Nova          Philly                        9000
Providence      Providence        5000
Seton Hall       New Jersey              9500
Marquette       Milwaukee                11500
DePaul          Chicago                25000

Xavier          Cincy                        7000
Butler              Indianapolis        4500
St. Louis          St. Louis                11000

BU              Boston                 29000
Dayton          Columbus                 10000
Richmond          Richmond                 4000
VCU                  Richmond                 30500
George Mason VA                         33500
Northeastern   Boston                 20500
Old Dominion   Norfolk                 24500
Cleveland St.   Cleveland                 17000

Gonzaga           Seattle                 8000
Loyola Mymt   LA                         9000
Pepperdine   LA                          7500
St. Mary's    SF                         4000
San Diego   SD                         8000
San Fran           SF                         10000
Santa Clara   SF                         8500
Denver           Denver                 11000
Seattle           Seattle                  7500

Also here are the top DMA's.  Bolded are where we would probably have representation.  The problem is a lot of the Western/Texas cities have schools with football schools.  Would love to get into 1 or 2 more of the Top 10 cities for TV contract purposes.

I share the sentiments re. UCONN.  Having said that, I'd like to see a game every year with them.

As for keeping the name "Big East" for ourselves with a new conference with legendary basketball schools, I'd love it, but I don't see it happening.  Maybe we need a new name for our newish brand.  Maybe we'll be "Elite East" or something.

Just suggestions as you try to penetrate a Top 10 market in Boston.  And they have very big enrollment.  Some of the good schools we like have very small enrollment numbers and might present an attendance issue.  Again Xavier, Butler and St Louis are my first 3 invites.  That gets you to 10.  I still want to get to 12 and want to hit big markets for bigger TV deal.

Providence Journal article says they are looking at a 10 team league and Butler Xavier Dayton are the top choices.

NY Post is reporting the dissolution of the BE as being a done deal already.

Lenn has this thing for writing a good article and then putting a head scratcher in there.

What is the point of this random line at the end of the article

"The future of St. John’s and Seton Hall is uncertain."

Don't leave out the next line Moose:

The future of St. John’s and Seton Hall is uncertain. St. John’s has a much stronger brand name and it is one of just six schools to have developed its own HDTV network than can broadcast games on television, computer and hand held devices.

To me, that suggests, perhaps St. John's has interest from the ACC or someone else.  HOWEVER, If the ACC is looking to expand with some but not all of the Catholic 7, I'd imagine they'd want all 3 of Gtown, Nova, and St. John's.  St. John's alone seems strange (and I doubt St. John's would leave by itself).  Anyway, I imagine you are right that it means nothing and is just Lenn being Lenn.

The interest there was  very quick convo.

If he used our new network to put down Hall and show how were moving up and they aren't I'd understand it.  Just seemed very out of place to me and random.

IMPORTANT line from Post story if true:

Voting to dissolve "would allow them to keep the name and its contract with The Garden, where it has held its postseason tournament since 1981."
Parking only for NYCHA permit holders.

Agreed Choz.  I think this is the key to the 7's game plan.  Without this right, breaking away from the BE is much messier.

“@NJHoopsHaven: The bball schools realized the financial hit for having a basketball conference might not be as bad as they were led to believe.”

“@NJHoopsHaven: The ball schools needed to get their own consultants to project the numbers, not rely on people vested in keeping the Big East together.”

Choz's to-do list for 12-13-12:

Hire lawyers to retain Big East name (get the ones that got Walter Berry eligible)

The funniest line today.

Next time I find myself in court I want those lawyers as well.

If this happens, UConn will be in a tough spot.  ;D

"UConn president Susan Herbst has contacted officials from the non-FBS Big East members, pleading with them to stay in the league"

Ha ha.

I guess shame no longer exists in our society.  Better yet, "Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned."

Bridge meet Susan Herbst.  Susan Herbst meet bridge.  See Susan Herbst jump off bridge...

CBS says the decision has been made, and the basketball schools will announce it within a week.

"The Big East's seven non-football-playing members have decided to separate from the league's football-playing members and would like to announce the decision within a week barring an unexpected change of plans, multiple sources within the conference told CBSSports.com on Thursday."

" But a source told CBSSports.com that those seven schools would target at least three and perhaps five basketball programs to join them, and that Xavier, Dayton, St. Louis, Creighton and Butler would be among the targets."

I love it! feel great today. We are starting to hold more cards in this game. How much does it suck for UCONN Cinci and USF?!

Also the first three I would target would be Xavier, Butler, and Dayton.  Im not in love with st louis, sorry moose.

Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated says the basketball only schools would make more in a new conference than we do now.

"The Big East basketball schools make about $1.6 million annually ($26 million divided among the 16 schools), but that number was tied to strong brand names like Syracuse, Louisville and Pittsburgh.  Conversations with multiple consultants and television executives about the future of a 12-team Catholic conference have yielded a range of figures.  The Big East schools could easily get their current financial number and likely get $2 million annually with a new deal. At the most optimistic ceiling, the teams could get $3 million per year, although that's considered Pollyannaish."
