fwiw, i would prefer to add dayton in addition to the other two, and keep it to ten schools.  everybody plays each other twice.  top eight teams make the tourney.  not nearly the league we once had, but at least i can identify with the schools.  the best scenario in a bad situation.  i think, as a minimum, gtown, st johns, nova, marquette, and xavier need to be strong year in and year out for the league to be successful.  then, if we get a strong year from any of the other schools, it would be gravy.
First no Temple because it is a catholic league. :) Would agree that a 10 team league is slightly preferable to 12 as if you play everyone twice you build up rivalries with all members were as 2 divisions of 6 each playing other division only once you don't get the rivalries. Only disagree with your not including all teams in post season tourney as I remember how much it sucked to be shut out of it. Nothing wrong with first day of 8-9 and 7-10 to get to quarterfinals, or for 12 teams top 4 bye and than the quarters.

don't think the league is strong enough to promote those games.  how many people will show up at the garden to see dayton play depaul?
The same # that show up to see Depaul play anyone. Maybe more given the general sentiment re: Dayton's fan support

Wait, is this really going to be a catholic only league?
That post article mentions xavier Dayton st Louis creighton and duquesne being contacted... What do those schools all have in common?
No discussions with butler or vcu ?  or does Lenny just not know of them?

This is troubling imo.   I didn't think catholic only was a real possibility.
Always assumed the league would be.mostly catholic.  But exclusively?  that's going to rub people the wrong way.

Have never heard a catholic conf, just schools of similar makeups, Butler for example is not a catholic school

In that Post article, Lenn Robbins only mentions catholic schools as having been contacted;  Xavier, Dayton, Creighton, St Louis, even Duquesne.
And on ESPN; Mike Brey is quoted as hearing something similar; a "national catholic conference".    That worries me

what worries me is that at the Friday semi finals of the tournament, they wouldn't serve hot dogs or sausage and peppers-only fish tacos ;)

I also think it is funny that no one wants uconn. However I would prefer to beat them in a packed garden in a game that is televised nationally on CBS.

Call me crazy but Id take UConn, temple and Memphis for a few years if they bowed down and kissed the feet of the 7 (UConn) and abandon football (Temple).

DONE YO.

By By RALPH D. RUSSO AP College Football Writer
WASHINGTON December 15, 2012 (AP)
The seven Big East schools that don't play FBS football have decided to leave the conference and pursue a new basketball framework.

The presidents of the seven schools made the announcement Saturday, saying it was a unanimous vote.

The move leaves Connecticut, a founding member of the league in 1979, Cincinnati and South Florida — three current members with FBS football programs — up in the air concerning their futures.

The seven schools are: Georgetown, St. John's, Villanova, DePaul, Marquette, Seton Hall and Providence.

The Big East is still lined up to have a 12-team football conference next season with six new members joining, including Boise State and San Diego State for football only. Rutgers and Louisville, which both announced intentions to leave the Big East, are still expected to compete in the conference next year.

The presidents have scheduled a news conference at 4:30 p.m.
Parking only for NYCHA permit holders.

Catholic conference could be fun.  We could start games like Florida State FB with the burning spear on the 50 yard line.  We could burn a hertic at center court--would really generate TV ratings ;)

Lots of details to be worked out. #Georgetown AD Reed says it's "3rd inning of a 9-inning game."

Why does it worry you.  We are what we are.

Let me rephrase that, it doesn't "worry" me Moose - you're right, we are what we are.   I actually like having a catholic identity, and shared heritage.   It's what made Marquette and our sister school Depaul such natural rivals when they joined the BE.  Seemless fit.

But I would be concerned that tv networks wouldn't want to carry an all-catholic league.   I know NBC has no problem hosting Notre Dame, and they run religious themed ads throughout the telecast.   But a whole league that is all catholic schools?    I think that may rub some of the network bosses the wrong way.
I hope I'm wrong though.
And who knows - maybe we are talking to Butler and VCU.

Saw this on the Hoya forum, it's a quote from a Gonzaga message board...  gave me a good laugh  ;D

"I am starting to warm up to the Catholics Only Conference (COC) idea. If named as commissioner of the new COC league, I can offer the following brainstorming ideas:

Cheerleaders dressed as members of the College of Cardinals?
Communion in the stands at half time?
Instead of athletic shoes, the players must wear sandals like Jesus did?
Concession stands sell loaves and fishes only, plus cups of water? (water into wine conversions subject to local liquor regulations)
Personal fouls categorized as either venial (one shot) or mortal (two shots)?
Players called for technical fouls required to particpate in confession / reconcilliation sacrament before returning to the playing floor?

Just getting started . . .

Go Bulldogs!"

“@SIPeteThamel: If New East ends up at 12, it would likely be X, Butler, Dayton, SLU and Creighton. (Temple, GMU, VCU will be considered).”

The timing of this new league could be perfect for us.   If we can manage to grow, and not lose D'angelo or Jakarr after the season - then next season should really be a breakthrough year for us.   Even more so if Lawrence or Jordan are on campus, and if Branch develops.
Next year it sounds like Louisville, ND etc will all still be in the BE, plus Memphis and Temple.
We have the opportunity to go out with a banner year against a still very strong Big East, and enter the new conference on a high note.
