Bobre is still mad Lavin didn't take his advice to see a shrink last year.

Dude is lost and hates Lavin.  Grain of salt.

I thought we played pretty well....Providence has some talent...we just can't shoot.  I do wish Lavin called a TO on that last possession with 40 seconds left when we started going in circles.  Garrett had a really bad game.  He seems lost out there the last few games.  Hopefully Branch can get going next game.

When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

See a lot of disappointment with Phil throughout this thread.  His shooting certainly leaves a lot to be desired.  Imagine a combined shooting over 3 games (Xcuse, Ville and Pitt) of 11-44.  What is he doing out there?  He is replacing D'angelo because it was D'angelo who shoot 11 for 44 in those games while Phil was 18 for 44.  Not saying he is a shooter but he is the only option we currently have for the 2 guard position so get over it.  He has given his best, albeit not a superstar.  As long as he stops those constant 3 pointers, I will not get on his case as it shows learning that that is not his shot.  While he was 4 of 15 last night, I would take that over someone's say 1 of 12 in the Pitt game.
I like Phil. But I dont think he should be playing 37 min a game. One could make an argument to play Marco more. Of course w DLO out and Branch not a 100%, I will admit our options are limited. I keep saying to myself if DLO doesnt return I would not want to see Greene playing 37min  a game at the 2 next year.

People say Greenes natural position is a 2. What did he shoot last night 25%. I wouldnt want him taking DLO place next yeaR, IF DLO doesnt return.

I love our direction and am happy but firmly believe that to get to the next level, guys like Greene have to be coming off the bench...If he is still a central figure, we will be hard pressed to get to where we want to go...He was not recruited to be starter and is only starting because Lindsey left...goal should be to use him in the role for which he was recruited...obviously to do that we need to keep getting players...

We've seen our last win of the year and I'm totally furious with Lavin hanging out our dirty laundry at this time of the year and screwing the kids who worked so hard and the fans who paid to see better.  This was all about ego.  There would have been no harm in just cutting Dlo's minutes and letting the season play out the way it should have would have sufficed instead of building on our horse's ass reputation.  Watching him sitting his second best shooter all game only confirms that the UCLAns were right about this
guy.  He is a self promoting know nothing who doesn't care about anyone but himself.  That's about as far as you can get from the classic St. Johns Vincentian coach type. Can't wait till he finally swindles his way into the league so we can bring someone legit in.

Now that you're done stamping your feet...

Just a side note, looking at the box score branch only had 3 assists. This is extremely telling of our inability to hit/finish shots. He should have had 4 in the first few minutes alone. Ge three a few incredible passes during that stretch which showed to me what type of impact he can have on our team when we learn to get stops and rebound consistently. Also need to teach JaKarr how to find branch and make an outlet pass.

Bottom line: we need shooters. Shooters, shooters, shooters. Mid-range shooters, 3 pt shooters, free throw shooters...we need shooters! I just don't get it...I watch a ton of CBB and even the unranked teams just seem to be able to recruit pure shooters...why can't we? I don't mean Marco and Hooper type guys who can only stand still, catch the ball and shoot. I mean guys who can create their own shots and be athletic enough to still handle the ball. So many teams have these guys, and we don't. I can't help but think it's because Lavin recruits athletes instead of basketball players. Instead of having a broad array of athleticism and "little bit of everything" players, we need those skill guys who can just shoot the lights out. We need our Cashmere Wright, our Calhoun, our Arcicando (whatever), our Curry, our McDermott, etc. Where are they? I don't care if the guy is 5'10...just GET SHOOTERS! So many teams have them so it leads me to believe they are more than attainable, but all we have are inside scorers.

Another way to look at it: if the world was ending and you lived in a small community that survived the apocalypse, would you want 1 highly-skilled doctor, 1 highly-skilled construction worker, and 1 highly-skilled survival expert OR 3 people who do all those things moderately well but without any true skill in 1 specific asset? Right now we have the latter. We need skill.

I agree with Choz.  The biggest factors next year will be if Obekpa develops some low-post skills, if Orlando is as skilled inside as he is touted to be, and if Jakarr comes back 15 lbs. stronger and willing to mix it up inside a bit more.

Simplyred, that still won't solve our shooting problems though. We can't have either pure shooting or post scorers...we need a mix. Look at UConn...they have the 3 guards who can shoot and penetrate, then they have the big German guys who bang down low and rebound. That's what I want us to emulate.

Emulate a team we beat?

Havin a low post threat will improve our shooting most certainly.

We got none (except CJ who it a few hooks in November).

Beating a team doesn't necessarily mean you are better. I know that sounds crazy, but think about it...Vermont beat Cuse once...but if they simulated 100 games Cuse would likely win at least 90 times. UConn was slaughtering us in the 2nd half when they began raining 3's shooting into an ocean. If the game went another quarter, we definitely lose that one...you know what I mean if you saw it. UConn is a much better team than us IMO. They can shoot, they can penetrate, they can post up, they are fast and athletic. Their only major downside is probably a lack of size since they go with a 3 guard attack.

Selfish, by Jakarr at the end
he's our go-to player...are you nuts?

I would have suggested a timeout after the FT miss, but it probably wouldn't have mattered. We are terrible coming out of timeouts.
How many 3's has he hit this year are you nuts? He had Jamal wide open in the corner second game he has done that this season. He's our best player by far but that's no excuse for not swinging the rock to a wide open shooter in the corner,

They are not MUCH better.  Trailing by double digits then rallying to take the lead before losing is not evidence of being much better, it is not even evidence of being better.

Agreed.  Take Harrison out even.  Branch/Greene/Obepka/ Sanchez/Sampson with Pointer and Garrett et al and an off season of growth is a Tourney team.  With Harrison they will be a favorite to win the new League.

I think we'll be solid next year if Sanchez is pretty good.  But in order to get where we want next year -  to win a couple of games in the NCAAs - we'll need dramatic improvement in our shooting.  Greene has to take 60,000 jump shots in the off-seasn to improve his three point shooting (240 off-season days x 250 shots a day). Obekpa has to dramatically improve his free throw shooting and add a baby-hook.  Branch also has to be consistent in his outside shot (he's shown flashes in his limited minutes this year).   Pointer has improve his free throw shooting a lot, even though he has a funny release, but continued improvement in his jumpshot will help.  Sampson must get up to a 70% to 73% in free throw shooting, and it'd be nice if he could add some more range to his game.

I think Sanchez + Branch together, creating passes from up-top and down-low should lead to a better half court offense.

We have the pieces - we have a point guard, we have some tall lankly athletes that can play some great defense in stretches.   We just need guys getting minutes that can shoot.

I think some y'all got some misconception.

Orlando is 6'9" but he is not a low post scorer. He is straight face the basket brother a taller more refine Reggie Jessie.

What I'm talkin bout is a hardcore brother on the blocks. And that... we don't have

Can he catch the ball in the post - represent an offensive threat to the defense - and pass well out of the post?

:idiot2: A favorite to win the new league? With Harrison we were fighting to stay in the top 10. Are you forgetting G'Town, Nova, Butler, Marquette? I'd pick 5th place as a much safer bet if my money was on the line. Unless Sanchez turns into one of the best players in SJ history, this team has a ceiling of 3rd-4th in the new conference if I'm being realistic not letting my bias tempt me.
