Replacement for Lavin

Went to the Providence/Albany Game in providence.  Great coaching job by Will Brown, Albany coach. In first game of the year his team ran the offensive sets beautifully and played solid D against a far bigger and athletically superior Providence team, taking them to the wire.  I think SJU needs to start thinking seriously about replacing Lavin and I nominate Brown, a great bench coach and solid recruiter who has made the tournament.  Only question, can he recruit at a major conference level? 

Agreed. I remember one of his teams playing Uconn very tough in the tournament one year. He's done a nice job at Albany.

I don't think he's the Home Run type of hire we would want if Lavin gets canned.  It would be an upgrade from an X and O standpoint but he couldn't get the caliber of player we expect.

Great story but the new AD thought of it. His wife is from Saratoga County, plus his parents just moved upstate having family nearby is very important to him.  His kids are young. A friend used to be on his staff and he told me he would've considered it prior to Lavin. So who knows now, but the recruiting could be an issue.

Will grew up across the street from me on Long Island.  We played a lot of hoops together.  He's a good guy and has done a nice job at Albany.  That said, I have no idea how he would recruit or what types of connections he has in the NYC area.  Boy could he shoot though.

Lucky enough to have talked to him before. Good guy and definitely knows his stuff.  Was very impressed with his sets against providence. Not my first choice by any means but would not be upset if he was ever considered for a job at st johns.

First choice is a guy who has a clear philosophy on coaching, and not random philosophies on developing players as people. My first choice also thinks that just because he's a coach, that doesn't give him the right to think of himself as someone who should be doing more than his job. Which is coaching.

I could really care less if he can recruit, because if he can coach, like whoever seems to be coaching programs like Xavier and Dayton, we'll always be competitive, and we won't be at the mercy of an 18 year old savior. We've had bigger recruits here than Briscoe and those guys couldn't save us. They couldn't because it takes a team to save a program. But first, it takes a coach.

Remind me again which hoops programs Fraschilla built?

recruiting and getting and keeping guys eligible are dependent on coaching, eventually the kids  gravitate towards the coaches who can win and to do this they must be a motivator and game coach.  Witness UK and SJU loosing first round torney games because they gave up, a coach and motivation problem.  You can lose with the strongest recruits if you cant motivate them to play and play together.

What about....
Masiello - Pitino disciple, ACC experience as an assistant. Has done a great job at Manhattan. 
Cluess  - Has won wherever he has coached.  Four straight 20 win seasons at Iona and he has deep ties to the SJU program. 
Patsos - Gary Williams disciple, ACC experience as an assistant.  Won at Loyola which was one of the worst programs, appears to have turned around Siena.  Three straight 20 win seasons.  The NYC media would love him.
