Grading the coaching staff
« on: March 08, 2018, 05:15:12 PM »
For two weeks St.John’s proved they could beat anyone. Unfortunately for us the season is longer than that.

So, what say you Johnny faithful? How did Chris Mullin and company do?

4 years ago We had a coach, who had faults. But we were way better then this. 4 years ago we beat Xavier. 4 years ago we were the bullies. Now we compete with depaul for last place.
Today I watched the game with non St. John’s fans. They asked questions “why doesn’t anyone move on offense? Why does St. John’s crash the boards?” One guy said “st. John’s is awful, this game sucks, they just chuck up shots from the outside. Hopefully the next game is good.”
What would you call the offense? Certainly not motion.
Defense - man defense has been much improved. It has been good and at times excellent. Can’t tough man with everyone In foul trouble. Yakwe? Trimble looked like he has never played defense 1 time in his life today.
Zone defense- absolutely awful.
Players deserve a huge amount of credit. They hung with Xavier for a half with Trimble, cole , and a much improved (still not good) Amar. How many easy shots did Xavier get? Did we get even 1? Alley oops are fun. Not only way to get a basket.
4-14 is an F for any coach. Unless you are a god or a hero. I bet his final grade is a C.
Last coach in year 3 of complete rebuild won 20 games. Number 1 seed in NIT. We got blown out. That team had similar talent to the current team.

Agree with some of what you said.  We were limited offensively by personnel with Lovett's departure.  Go back to last night, I thought the offense looked very good.  Everyone contributing, sharing the ball, set plays, etc.

Also, to compare the talent on this squad to the NIT team that endured the Robert Morris debacle is an insult to that squad (which, btw, was year 4 of Lavin, and while a rebuild, a much easier one coming off a top 25/NCAA squad).  The team that lost to Robert Morris went 8/9 deep with talent everywhere - Jordan, Harrison, Greene, Sampson, Pointer, Obekpa, Gift, Sanchez, Branch and Hooper who was playing a level above where he should.  That team not only had depth; it had good depth.  Even taking out the most talented guys (Dlo, Karr, Dom, Jordan), you add Branch, Sanchez and Phil or Gift to this team and we are probably dancing.  That 14-15 wasn't a lock tourney team was one of the worst coaching jobs we've seen at SJU.

4 years ago We had a coach, who had faults.

Four years ago we had four seniors who were able to overcome the coach's incompetence and manged to win six more games than a coach you think should have been fired two years ago. Four years ago we had a coach who won one less BE game than the coach we have now has won. Four year ago we had a coach who managed one post season win in five years. Four years ago we had a coach who scoured the Riviera for recruits and came up with Amar Alibegiwitz. Four years ago was a long time ago and you're still posting the same shit, albeit from a different toilet.

Aww did Tony get embarrassed that his friends were dissing on our program and now he’s having a fit about it?  The cupboard was left bare. We hired a coach w no experience. There have been serious missteps. But I’m very encouraged  by this season since February.  We retain our underclassmen and make the dance next year and could be on our way towards building something very positive.

I suggest you see a gastroenterologist.  You are very angry when you shit.

I'm a generous grader and am basing this off the momentum the squad played with down the stretch. The 4 game winning streak, including 2 huge Top 5 wins, was obviously the season's highlight. But if you look at the overall body of work then it's a disappointment as a whole. 0-11 to start BE play and finishing 4-14 in league play is unacceptable in Year 3. The staff's lack of in-game coaching and adjustments lost them a few games. Not adding another big to the roster clearly hurt them today and all year long.  If they keep the core 4 (Ponds, Clark, Owens, Simon) plus the incoming kids and a few more pickups then they could be a 20 win team next year while making the dance. Mullin and staff (hopefully some new assts) need to get to work.

Looking at Mullin as the general manager of the team. He must take responsibility for the roster.

The Michael Brown thing really set us back. Was the recruitment of Brown the cause for Sima to quit and transfer? Did the schollie he save for Brown keep us from signing someone? Sid Wilson, same result. A wasted schollie, leaving us with just nine scholarship players going into the season. Lovett quits. Yakwe on the milk carton. Seven scholarship players for the 18 game Big East season?
General Manager Mullin; D-.

Coach Mullin showed a lot of improvement. The team played really good defense this year. I could see using the three in the first half to open up the paint in the second half, and vice versa. He got into Ponds' ear that he doesn't have to put up chucks from thirty feet with twenty seconds left on the shot clock. Simon, Ponds and Clark did show good development. Owens has to be pulled when he shoots his 2nd 3-pointer in a game.
Head Coach Mullin C+

The Next Basketball season starts pretty much after the national championship. Since last April 5 guys left. 2 top recuits didn’t come. Who is leaving now? Those are missteps? Or signs of incompetence.
As for my stomach, getting old. Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon is getting tough. The only way that doesn’t happen next year is if we lose Wednesday night.

How do you figure this? They've improved every year so far. Even if Ponds leaves they should have a full roster with experience to finish in the top 6 next year. They were predicted/probably would have finished top 6 this year if Lovett's daddy didn't tell him to quit on his teammates.

Lavin in 5 years had ONE BET win. At UCLA he had McDonald's All American's and could not get out of Sweet 16. Bad game coach. Just ask Baron Davis

Simon and Clark were brought here to bring the toughness that we lacked last year. They didn’t. Opposing teams shoot uncontested shots at will. Defense is about effort, and this group is too soft to compete with Xavier for 40 minutes if they’re not shooting the lights out.

What’s the excuse for never boxing out? What the excuse for leaving shooters wide open? It’s an undisciplined team, and even in year three, there’s still a rookie coach at the helm.

You are asking the staff to get to work in year three. Think about that for a moment. In what line of work would this level of laziness and incompetence not result in getting fired?

For the record I gave him a C plus, slightly above average. I'd have given a lesser mortal a C, but it's Mullin. Like if Mozart wrote a bad symphony I'd have bumped him up a grade too. Regarding the repetitive boring nonsense you post ad nauseam, if you said Lavin sucked and Mullin sucks too, that'd be something. But no. You're pining for a guy who won one post season game in five years and fewer BE tournament games in five than Mullin's won in three. Which makes you a dope who has noting better  to do than drone on and on while he shits on the train. Which no offense, I couldn't bring myself to do it, hence the diverticulitis, but you might want to reconsider what you do with your toilet time, because you're wasting it.

So, the majority vote believes that Mullin did an average job. He went 5-15 in the Big East. If he goes 10-10 next year does he get an A and a statue on campus?

Winning half your games could not be more average. Which don't you understand, math or English?
