Is Sampson's recent rise propelling him to be 1 & done?

Without a doubt Rookie of the year in the BE. However does anyone get the sense that he could take over and carry us like Harkless did? In my opinion he def needs another year. If his people assure him he will be a first round draft pick, then you can't blame the kid, but I just do not see it.  I think another year, putting on some muscle and maybe extend his range out a couple feet. Maybe I am wrong, but I just don't see him as a first round pick right now.

It works in college. In the pros, he doesn't a position. Yet. Let him grow up as a player first. High ceiling, but he's not even close to ready for that.

He should stay!  But if he is a first round pick, he'll go, and who can blame him ?  I thought it was a mistake for Harkless to go and now he is starting and getting a lot of PT in the NBA.

I thought Harkless game was more NBA ready. He was smoother and a better athlete. Sampson is a good athlete, I just thought Harkless was at another level. I hope he stays, never going to happen but if he stayed 4 I think he could be really special.

Other than the Zags article, there has been precisely zero mention of Sampson on the NBA draft radar for this year.  At this point last year, Harkless was ~30 on Chad Ford's top 100.  Sampson isn't on the list at all.  Jeff Goodman did something similar last week and did not have Sampson getting drafted.  Not that they are perfect indicators, but they are the best measurements out there for public consumption.

Jakarr's stock will require a meteoric rise in the next 4 weeks in order for him to be a safe bet for the first round.  Not impossible given the weak draft class, but it seems unrealistic at this point.

See for yourself:

Guys like Blair, Monroe, Gay and Flynn stayed 2 years.  Scottie Reynolds stayed all 4.  Carmelo and Moe stayed only 1.

Dom James stayed 4 years.  Jeff Green stayed 3.

Should be here at least 2, IMO.  Love him and can't wait to see his game develop further.

I think next year Sampson could be the difference between a great year and a good year. With the loss of Lawrence ,he is even more important. He gets better every game. Last year few saw Moe jumping at this time. I hope he stays, but wouldnt be suprised to see him leave for the NBA.

“@BigEastMBB: Providence F Kadeem Batts (25 pts, 9 rebs. vs Cincinnati) is 2/11 Player of the Week; St. John's F JaKarr Sampson is Rookie of the Week.”

He had a scintillating up and under reverse jam yesterday.  Can take guys one on one,  reliable mid-range jumper,  good speed,  great hops, hard working defender, good rebounder and always smiling with a great attitude in interviews.  A pleasure to watch.

I think he needs 4 years here.

Harkless is/was a better overall player at same point last year but Sampson is an athletic freak, Harkeless not in the same league as this kid.

Not sure what you are basing that on Pat. Personally I think Harkless was a better athlete. In fact he gives Carmelo Anthony some problems. I am not saying Sampson isn't a good athlete. But I would have him as the third best on this team.

Besides better range on his jumper and a slightly smoother handle - what did/does Harkless do so much better than Sampson.

I think Sampson jumps higher, runs the floor better, has a better motor and higher upside.

Harkless has a higher hoops IQ, shoots it much better but if you remember last year, the big complaint with Harkless was that he would vanish at times.

Harkless looked herky jerky sometimes.  Smooth but still disjointed in ways.  I think thats where PMG and I agree think Karr is a better athlete.  They are both explosive in their own ways.

God to think if we had them together.

I think Sampson runs like a gazelle is is a good jumper. Obepka, Pointer and Harkless all are better leapers IMO. Harkless blocked two of Anthony's shots last time they played and generally bothered him. Athletically Harkless belongs in the NBA. I can't say the same for Sampson at this point.

Moe has better intuition on the court.

On Monday, the St. John's freshman forward was honored as the Big East's Rookie of the Week for a league-leading sixth time. He is moving closer to inevitably being named the conference's Rookie of the Year next month.

Sampson averaged 19.5 points and six rebounds, and shot a combined 17-29 (58.6%), in the Red Storm's two games last week. He scored 18 points in the Johnnies' win over Connecticut on Wednesday, and dropped 21 points (one shy of his career high, which came against San Francisco) in the loss at Syracuse on Sunday.

In Big East play, the freshman is 6th in the Big East in points with 179 in total, tops among freshmen. Sampson averages 14.9 points per game (first among freshmen) and rebounds with 6.2 per contest, second among freshmen to Pittsburgh's Steven Adams who averages 6.8. With each game against league competition, Sampson seems to look more comfortable.
