Barkley had almost nothing to learn. He was on from day one.

Most impressive STJ frosh I ever seen and that include the great one.

He was a senior as a freshman. Should be on the coaching staff.

Not a fan, like most here, of Gottlieb, but his list puts things in perspective re Sampson's competition should he choose to go;

maybe LeBron tells the Heat to draft him 42nd and give him a guaranteed 4 million and season him on the bench for a year or two. Which would also set him up for life.

That is a good point. Heat will have what the 29th, 28th pick. So that would not be out of the realm of possibility that they could even pick him at end of 1st round. Again with some improvements and another year I could see him going in the teens. More dough good for him, another year good for us.

Marillac, Sampson scores 75% of his points on 18 foot jumpers. Not sure how that translates to the pros, but he has a better jumper than Harkless had. When you combine evrything, yes Harkless is a better athlete which is why he was drafted in the 1st round and Sampson wont be.

WASJU - how are you translating shooting and athleticism.

Athletically..  what did Mo Harkless do better than JaKarr Sampson?

Rebounded better and despite the couple of nice dunks he has thrown down Harkless finished better in traffic. Someone might keep this stat and I do not know what they would be but I would bet Harkless had more dunks last year than Sampson does this year.

Really for me it is the eyeball test. There were games last year where Harkless was clearly the best player on the floor. I don't get that feeling with Sampson. In my opinion Harkless going pro last season was something I could understand. I think Sampson going pro would be a big mistake for him.

I thought Harkless game was more NBA ready. He was smoother and a better athlete. Sampson is a good athlete, I just thought Harkless was at another level. I hope he stays, never going to happen but if he stayed 4 I think he could be really special.

Harkless is/was a better overall player at same point last year but Sampson is an athletic freak, Harkeless not in the same league as this kid.

Agree with WSJU, thought harkless was the better athlete. His  smoothness sometime gave the perception that he wasnt  as athletic as he was.

Guys - some of you are confusing athleticism and basketball skill, I am sorry but they are not one in the same.

There is a big difference unfortunately btw whether a guy is "ready" and if he will be drafted favorably. As has been stated many times on this site, guys are often drafted on potential.

The truth is, Moe was not actually ready either. He plays on one of the suckiest teams in the league and the would be starter has been injured all season. On another team he is warming the end of the bench and possibly seeing time in the D-league.

I dont think Jakarr is ready and it would be in his best long-term interest (and St. Johns) if he stayed for another season. But he has huge NBA upside, and he may very well be drafted in the 1st round on that basis. Especially if he contiues to have very good games against elite competition as he has lately.

At this point I would not bet either way.

Harkless had a window of opportunity due to his draft class + potential. While Sampson shares potential he lacks the opportunity this year with it being stacked with FR/SO who are simply better right now.

Harkless is not more athletic than JaKarr. He was stronger though.

Dave, are you, Marillac and Pat on the athleticism committee. I met all three of you so I am going to go out on a limb and say no. IN MY OPINION Harkless is a better athlete. See the "IN MY OPINION" thing there. You guys are making a statement like you have the stats to back up ypour claim. Unless someone has their 40 times and vertical leap numbers I guess it is up for debate.
BTW the actual basketball skills are not refined yet, but I have seen about 5 or 6 of Harkless games this year and athletically he belongs. Jumping ability, quickness, strength. I do not think you could say the same about Sampson.
Dave, you should be able to pull up some sort of dunk tracker for the two guys.

You posted earlier about their relative athleticism but Jakarr is a better leaper and athlete then Obekpa and Harkless and it's not close.  Jakarr is upper level athlete.  We have quite a few on this team like pointer, Garrett, Balamou, jones etc.  Jakarr is a flyer though.

What is the vertical and 40 times? Or is this just your opinion?  Becuase the fact that we disagree based on our different opinion on a subject makes me feel even better about my opinion. If you had agreed with me I would have changed my mind ;)

I hope Jakarr has a level head and sees that he needs a bit more muscle, moves and 3-point range.  I don't want to count on it, because he's got entry going for him, including a mid-range game which is a rarity amongst college bball players.  He can be lottery with another year under his belt, depending on his draft position.  I wish all kids weren't in such a rush.

No doubt theres money to be made, but the preparation he can do here for another year would buy him a better initial contract as well as NBa staying power.  Jakarr is a bit more raw than Moe at the same point and lacks range.  Like I said, I don't want to count on anything.  He'd be smart to do his due diligence and sending him to the pros is great for our program.  One more year would do him a great deal of benefit though I think.

At the same height, Sampson can get his head above the rim.  It's something that Harkless couldn't do.  As unscientific as it might be, Jakarr passes the eye test as the better athlete both in speed up and down the court and vertical.  He's a dominant athlete.  Harkless was a very good athlete, and quite polished player for a freshman.  Whether you agree with me or not doesn't matter.  I think most others will agree though.

I think having a team that wins and is ranked high is better for SJU than having a 1 and  done player.
