Gray started the second half along with Thornton, Postell, Glover and Jessie.

Where was Barkley? Good question.

That was actually in the semifinals.  Not the championship game.

I understand that Gray's numbers weren't earth shattering, but you have to remember that he played with Lavor Postell, Bootsy Thornton, Erick Barkley. Was he as good as those guys? No. You put Chudney Gray on SJ, the next year, where Omar Cook ran the offense, and let Gray take 15-17 shots per game, he'd be an all league player. On our stacked team, he was a role player.

Unfortunately, as a freshman he was stuck on the bench for no good reason.

He was the ninth man on that team.  Besides the starters, Collin Charles, Ty Grant and Mike Mennifield all saw more time than Chud.  Maybe the fact that he shot 6-28, including 3-16 from the three and 5-11 from the line was the "no good reason" why he didn't get more time.

The best guards that have come to St Johns have been local guys

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

We need some tough guards to compete.not guys that leave because someone yelled at him.

Phil Greene and D'Angelo Harrison are both as tough, confident, and passionate as it gets.  I think that duo has what it takes to lock down the point until 2013.  I would love to bring in a stud PG then, ala Uconn adding Khalid El-Amin and pushing Moore (Phil Greene) to that third guard role.

The minutes these two will get this year will make them insanely good next year with hours in the gym, watching tape, and conditioning to get faster and stronger.

Where was Barkley? Good question.

There was an altercation in the lockerroom at halftime and Barkley stayed in lockerroom when the team went back on the court.  He came out as the second half began.

Chudney originally committed to Manhattan but rescinded his committment when Fran left to come here.  Chud however wound up to be a partial qualifier.  Instead of enrolling in the fall, he took the SAT again, scored high enough to fully qualify and joined the team at the end of the first semester.  However, he was well behind the other players but we were struggling at the point so he was thrown in.  He wasn't ready.  He didn't play alot the next year either but I remember in maybe January of his junior year, jarvis saying he was the most improved player and he was going to get him more time.  From the point on he became a valuable player and was a key 6th man.  Hindsight being 20/20, I keep thinking how much better that next year's team would have been if he had redshirted his freshman year and played with Cook in the backcourt with Shaw upfront and Jessie as the sixth man.

Finally, you mentioned Mennefield, he was another player that joined during the midseason and I always worry if a player will be really able to contribute or if it is better just to set out the entire year (like Thornton and Brust who also transfered mid year although Brust had to sit an entire year as he came from UNC and not Juco.  But he only enrolled as a part time student that first year as we had no ships available and received a full ship the next year.  He wound up sitting out a year and a half).

So back to the point of the topic...!

St. John's is in a tough spot right now. One of the knocks on Lavin was that he was great at getting top-level recruits, guys people had heard of, but his track record with lesser-known players was considered only so-so (though many served their purpose). The team would love superstars, but this late in the recruiting game, it'll be hard to get many unless they proverbially fall off the truck (players who decommit, coaching changes, and the dreaded academic question marks).

The Johnnies [should] have four top-100 players next year, a solidly developing guard in Phil Greene, a solid JuCo center in Achiuwa. The team needs talent, yes, but they need depth/ bodies. So this seems to be a time for Tony Chiles, with his city contacts and his ability to spot some decent talent at the CAA level, to shine. But the program's only linked with Gathers, Obekpa, and Obekpa's teammate as a possible recruit.

It's strange not to hear St. John's name come from the lips of many recruits. Stealth recruiting? Or something else?

I don't think he'll be back. I think he's back on west coast shortly with a slight push from his wife

These rumors of him not coming back are typical recruiting tactics used by the low lifes that recruit against him. We are going to be fine and once you see the first commit happen, it will be a chain of 4 more...mark my words

How long can the school or lavin go without making a decision here?
