Just had thoughts of Fordham & Poison booking a trip together to see Sampson playing in China. Unlikely?  :)

I don't think there was ever any poster on here that said any of these guys were actually NBA ready after one year.  Unfortunately, the reality is that every year kids , with bad advisors, make terrible decisions.  Nothing surprises me after Omar Cook's dumb decision.

I hope everyone that wants to be back next year, is back...

also thought it was interesting that Sampson is listed as a PF. Just shows he needs to come back and work on those SF skills to really set him apart.

So Chad Ford has finally created a scouting report on Jakarr (and Obekpa). Obekpa is ranked 129 and Jakarr is ranked 135.

Jakarr- http://insider.espn.go.com/nbadraft/results/players/_/id/19943/jakarr-sampson

Obekpa- http://insider.espn.go.com/nbadraft/results/players/_/id/19942/chris-obekpa

Wow, both Sampson and Obekpa could be 5th round selections, AKA, playing in South America, or maybe China.

Or the next Al Attles, Mark Eaton (had to get a Bruin on the list), Manute Boll, Steve Mix, Willie Wise, Wil Jones,  ML Carr, James Silas, George Johnson or Allan Leavell  - or any of the numerous OTHER 5th round picks who had decent NBA careers.

When was the last 5th round NBA draft pick to have a good career?

Yes but Attles, Wise, Eaton, Jones, Carr, Silas and Leavell each played 4 years in college, so they had no other options.  Eaton was a 4th rounder.  Bol was a 2nd rounder.  Just because a very small fraction of 5th rounders had decent pro careers, it obviously doesn't make it a good bet to become a 5th round pick when you can actually improve your draft status by staying in school.

No knock on the kid, but every part of his game needs work. After he's in the league he must continue to bust his a** to stay there. Our chance to be good next year rests with our guys knowing how to bust it. Do we have a hard working group? We'll see.

Al Attles was drafted when there were like 12 teams in league so fifth round is top 60 and equivalent to 2nd round today. If they are ranked 125 and 129 that is equivalent to an 11th round pick for Attles.

Actually, Bol did try but the NBA didn't let him.  He was a 5th rounder in the 83 draft, directly out of the Sudan - but the NBA decided he wasn't yet eligible - even tho he was nearly 22.   Tried to enroll at Cleveland State - never played there - they ended up on NCAA probation because of him.  Ended up at Bridgeport in 84-85, by which time he was 24 (yes, 24 year old foreign born frosh ARE sometimes allowed to play).   He was drafted in the 2nd round in '85 after 1 year of college ball, and entered the league.

He played for the enemies but I always admired Willie Wise. Great Aba star.  Hearing his name again makes me reminisce fondly about things like Wendall Ladner.

Man he better not be 1 and done...losing him would decimate this team, and he's just starting to become a real force. Eerie how similar this feels to Moe! I guess it's a win win though ultimately, because it's never a bad thing to get your guys in the NBA...you never know who will become an NBA superstar then possibly donate a ton to SJ.

I worked for the Stars when Willie came into the league - for 5 years he put up 20/9 a year, with a best of 23/10 for us.  Good guy.  Scouted him on that great 1970 Drake team (SIX future pros - Willie Wise, Willie McCarter, Al Williams, Gary Zeller, Hal Jeter, and the kid, Jeff Haliburton)...Willie's best years were behind him when the merger came, so most NBA fans have no idea how good he was.  True of so many ABA players - Mack Calvin comes to mind, and especially arguably the greatest ABA winner - Indiana's GREAT Mel Daniels.  Absolute TRAVESTY it took 35 frickin years to get that guy into the Hall of Fame.

Back on Wise - Willie's nephew Eric has a shot at the pros next year.  He was 3-yr 16 pt scorer at UC-Irvine, transferred to USC.   Had 22 in their upset of #11 Arizona last night.  Don't think he'll get drafted, but he's a tough skilled kid - the kind that fight their way up from the D-League.

I recall Mel Daniels being an absolute monster and being more than a handful for our beloved Whopper; but don't recall or have forgotten Calvin Mack.

Mack Calvin - PG out of USC.  ABA All Star in 71, 72, 73, 74 and 75.  Best year was '71 -  27 pts and 8 assists a game for the Floridians.  He'd been 17 pts 6 assts as a rookie for the Stars in '70 - one of the brass's dumbest moves letting him go.   First team all ABA 71, 74 and 75, 2nd team in 73.     2nd all time in ABA history in Assists behind Louis Dampier.  8th all time in scoring.  #3 all time in FT% (which was huge, as he was #1 all time in FT Attempts in ABA history - so he's also #1 all time in FTs made).  And for me to rave about a U$C player, you KNOW he had to be good!

Back on point, Karr has to be stoked with the idea of having Sanchez next year. Front line of Obekpa, Sanchez, Karr, or at times Sanchez, Karr and Sir has to stir the competitive juices and allow him to showcase his game for the pros.

True. Or perhaps it shows he isn't ready for the spotlight.

Not sure if Sampson's stock goes up with Harrison being out, but even if that is the case I think the chance he returns to SJU next year increases with Harrison being out of the picture and with Sanchez now in the picture.  I've heard rumblings that Harrison made Sampson's life miserable.  I'm like most posters who think Sampson really needs at least one more year, but I've heard (again "rumblings") that even if a low draft pick, the propects of a professional paycheck mean a lot to Sampson and his family and he's ready to roll the dice and move on from college.  Just saying.

Cool, I've heard rumblings of the opposite. Neither means a thing. I think he is still too in between to be drafted. I think the league would like to see him get some "man rebounds" before he gets drafted too high. Nobody is going to draft a SF who isn't a stellar rebounder, can't dribble and can't hit a three ever. Not to mention I think some will be concerned about that little hitch in his shot.

I think the biggest difference between him and Mo (and this has probably been said before) but Mo was able to physically dominate a game. IMO Sampson hasn't really done that yet.
