This doesn't really have to do with our schedule but has to do with the scheduling process and thought it was appropriate.

The SEC, on the heels of what Commissioner Mike Slive called a “bad year” in men's basketball, has "hired former NCAA Tournament guru Greg Shaheen as a scheduling consultant," according to Mark Long of the AP. Shaheen gave "detailed presentations to coaches and athletics directors during the league’s annual spring meetings this week." SEC schools will send their "non-conference schedules to the league office for evaluation and possibly renovation." Slive said, “We’re going to make sure we’re playing the kind of schedules that will position us to put the number of teams in the (NCAA) Tournament that we have traditionally over the years." Shaheen this week handed "every SEC coach a 20-page report that broke down the league’s non-conference schedules from last year, with details that included how every game -- win or lose -- affected conference power ratings" (AP, 5/30).

Pretty interesting that a conference commissioner is going to start evaluating individual non-conference schedules for member institutions.  Not sure what kind of power he would have if he found a schedule objectionable.  Can he actually make a school change their schedule for lack of strength.

Why should we play on the west coast? Makes no sense. Would rather play a big ten team

That is true. A west coast game would help w publicity and recruiting, but another great way to get some national attention is to not get blown out by 35 whenever we play on national tv.

Recruiting, national exposure, etc.  We have ties out there and have recruited the West Coast pretty successfully in Lavin's tenure (even if, as it turns out, Pelle was ineligible and Polee/Amir transferred, they were all top 100 guys, with Pelle being a stud).  It has been said here that UCLA won't schedule us anymore because of the Lavin connection and the fact that we've played them well.  I would love a UNLV or San Diego St.

USC would be good too, we played head coach Andy Enfield's  FGCU team last year

Totally OT,  but Enfield's first date with his Maxim model wife was at SJU on campus.

"Their first official date was the following week: a National Invitation Tournament game between St. John’s and Virginia in Queens. The only place Enfield could find for dinner beforehand was an on-campus Taco Bell, and a romance bloomed over basketball and burritos."

Longwood was 8-25 last season.  I know we don't have much of a choice in scheduling them because it's part of the Barclays thing but  they're the definition of a cupcake.  Then again they did something we couldn't do last year,  beat UNC-Asheville.

Could have been a pretty good game.  Longwood was scheduled to have talent.  6'9 Swiss frosh Michael Kessens was a revalation this past season getting 14 pts and 9 boards a game - but he showed SO well he's transferred to Alabama.  They Do return leading scorer Tristan Carey, a 6'4 SG  back for his senior year after getting nearly 16 pts and 5 boards a game.     I guess some of you would know their 3rd leading scorer and 2nd leading rebounder, 6'6 225 rising Jr Jeylani Dublin - 10 pts and 6 boards - out of Brooklyn - Millbrook School. 22/10 as a senior there.   They're also getting a pretty good PG in as a JC transfer - Leron Fisher, who played his high school ball at South Kent.   And a bit of a sleeper in 6'8 SF Demarion Geter out of Dunbar High in Ohio.

They play in the Big South conference - so I see them play pretty regularly.  Conference Opponent Radford is about 20 minutes from my home.
