Maybe they can time it right on a busy sports news day so it gets less media attention

Let's see where he goes rather than speculate in the dark.  Maybe just tired of all the b-ball BS and becoming maitre'd at Rao's.  Maybe he and his wife want a family and the travel does not help.

You misuse the word "stable".  Hercules couldn't clean this stable of a program in 50 lifetimes.  My perspective comes from rooting for this program as long as many posters' parents have been alive.  Slice is an elite recruiter...a guy we need for a program where the very best recruits have traditionally held their noses when our pitchmen came around.  He's a big loss. Kentucky could afford to lose Slice.  We couldn't.

Sure, we'll go after second tier transfers and make do while the big boys clean up.  We'll play with ourselves when the Haggerty people announce first, second and third teamers from the Monmouth and Manhattan's of the world...and we don't have a single player making the list.

We have no X and O coach and "rooters" are hoping the very inexperienced St Jean is rewarded with a promotion after a season of abject failure.

That's my perspective.  And yours??

If we need BR to win recruiting battles against "big boys" like Manhattan and Monmouth we have bigger problems than BR leaving.

It's not that he maybe leaving, its why he's leaving when/if he does. If its for another opportunity, then that's one thing, but if its due to internal turmoil, then that's an issue we as a program need to look closer at. If it is the later then it would appear that Mullin chose Matt over him as one of them would need to go.   

 Really if you can manage you get rid of them both.

Name the last time an assistant coach was critical to a head coach's success. Except Mike Dunlap obviously.

My view is that the program will and should be fine if Slice leaves.  If he was the primary recruiter, it would be a different issue.  But Matt A has already provided himself very capable in that respect, both at Iowa State and in the 12 plus months since he's been on the board.

The circumstances surrounding his apparent departure are what folks find troubling.  Unless there is an issue that we are not aware of, the timing is very odd for a host of reasons.

Saturdays are the day to drop news like this, lowest circulation of any day in the week. Unless Slice agrees to keep a lid on it until we have a successor in place.

Also, I'd love to hear either SJU79's or Dave's take on this.

Of course his loss is optically challenging and definitely hurts long term recruiting efforts in places where his relationships are very strong.  But relative to the program's recent issues with player eligibility, recruiting disasters, drug test failures, on court underperformance versus preseason expectations, fist fights amongst players/coaches, conference realignment, etc. - Mullin has laid a strong foundation that is positioned for limited downside volatility (a relentless feature that plagued the program in the Lavin era).  Losing an assistant coach and replacing that coach with a HoFer who is being elevated from a smaller role on the staff, on paper, is not that a big deal given where we've been. 

While I'd prefer Slice be here for the long haul, and I question if the school can afford to buy him out, his primary value is in recruiting and we are in good shape there.

A lot of people here think it's recruiting that's more important to coaching so that makes people who are known recruiters very critical to a head coaches success
